You have a head gasket problem. Check oil as well, there is probably coolant in there as well. Is the tail pipe putting out a lot of white steam?

Have a compression test done on the engine to eliminate gasket problems . Check that the oil is engine oil and not transmission oil from a broken oil cooler in the radiator.. If you are sure that it is engine oil check that you have an engine oil cooler on the engine in which case it will be a gasket or corrosion in that unit.

Sounds like an intake gasket leak. Oil can leak into the cooling system without coolant leaking into the oil.

1985 vw cabriolet there is oil in the coolant resivior and in there none in the motor is there a valve that is not working or is the head warped


Not uncoomon. If you look where the oil filter is in the front of the motor by the radiator. Where the oil filter screws onto is the oil cooler and has coolant passing around it in a jacket. The oil pressure is greater than that of the cooling system pressure. Replace that cooler and flush the cooling system. This should cure it.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the thermostat to drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the oil filter.
  4. Disconnect the hoses from the cooler.
  5. Remove the nut holding the cooler to the oil filter base and remove the cooler.

To install:
  1. Position the oil cooler, then connect the coolant hoses. Tighten the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2. Install the oil filter and the thermostat.
  3. Fill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine, allow it to warm up check for coolant leaks.

2000 vw jetta 2.0 checked oil no oil showed on dip stick. saw that oil leaked into coolant system. replaced head gasket w/ new head bolts. flushed system, drained oil, new filter. after all done no oil...


Most likely place for oil into coolant is oil cooler, the aluminum box that mounts between the oil filter and a flange that comes off the block.

either you havent flushed the cooling system out properly ,or the oil cooler has packed up ,their is a oil cooler radiator of sorts that the oil filter screws onto ,these often leak ,just remove the water pipes and join them together with a small piece of copper pipe ,then if you see oil coming out of the water pipes fit a new cooler

Sounds like a blown cylinder head gasket between the water and oil passages and galleries. Is the amount of oil significant..not just a hint of a film? Do you have any sign of creamy looking 'mayonnaise' on the under side of the oil filler cap and entrance? This would be sign of the reverse i.e. that water had got into the oil. The oil in the engine is driven around the galleries under pressure, certainly more pressure than the coolant, so if there is a connecting leak oil will be forced through it into the coolant. The best way to make sure is to have your coolant system pressure checked by you local garage when the engine is really cold. With the engine off and the oil filler cap removed a leak will be indicated by the coolant pressure dropping slowly (as water is forced through the leak back into the oil system). Also monitoring the pressure of the coolant when the engine is started from cold will also reveal a leak. The coolant is at normal atmospheric pressure when cold and only when the engine gets hot does the pressure within the coolant system rise (somewhere between 7 - 10psi depending on power unit). However if there is a leak the pressure of the coolant will rise rapidly as the oil system reaches pressure quickly, in other words the coolant system will be forced to the same pressure as the oil system through the leak. The remedy is to renew the head gasket.

Getting oil in radiator --but no water in the oil--its NOT a blown head gasket or head -we allready checked that out -it's a datsun 1971 1600 cc engine with very low miles =truck runs great


What about the possibility of a crack in head gasket between oil passages and coolant passages. Oil pressure would be higher than cooling system pressure, thus oil would be more likely to enter cooling system, than coolant enter oil /lube system. Just a thought. Have you done a cooling system pressure test, just to see if any drop at all in pressure? Seeing how engine would not be running, oil pressure would be 0, and may allow coolant to seep through same path, only from cooling system, to oil. Is it a large amount that your getting?

Most probably an air pocket in ur coolant system, just let it run without the cap on the coolant bowl until no bubbles come out.
As for ur oil light and buzzing, it's most probably the low oil level sensors tripping out, which is normal for a VW.

There are two oil sensors, one on the front of the engine near the distributor and one on the right hand side of motor when ur facing the motor. The are both the same size and have only 1 wire on em.

If i remember one has a white connector and one has a black connector. Costs about 20 bucks for the pair.

Hi. the head gaskets on this engine should be replaced asap. they are worn and cracked. this will permit the mixture you have stated in your post.
