My mg zr battery keeps going flat and I got told its the alternator. I noticed today while having a look that when I rev the engine a spark comes from the alternator. Does this mean the alternator is dead?

Get the alternator checked. It should be charging at least 13.8v.
A normal voltmeter will work across the battery terminals.

The batteries they put in the trucks from the factory ****. I went through 3 of them under warranty, they lasted 6 months a piece.

I did research to find who made the factory model. I found an alternative manufacture and bought their battery and I have not had a problem sense. I bought a Duralast from auto zone.

My key fob for my mg zr is nackerd. Still works just the buttons have come off. How much and what mg dealers will supply a new one programmed for me ?

If it still works it shouldn't need replacing but fitting to a new case.

The last time I wanted one the cost from a dealer was stupidly expensive - really a rip-off.

I noticed the fob of an old Nissan Primera was the same and enquired at Nissan. They sold me a new case for just a couple of pounds.

This was quite a time ago but it could be still worth asking.

Mg zr drives well then for no reason the idle revs go from 1000 to 2000 without touching the accelerator peddle help

Is there a check engine light on? If no light. May be the TPS.Throttle Position Sensor. Is llight.Didnt say what year model car. Should be at front of throttle body. Check for anything loose or missing screws.

My mg zr has no spark 1.8vvc160 tuns over

because you have changed the head gasket I am thinking that there is a valve timing problem. If at any stage you turned the crank when the head was removed and refitted the head and cam shaft
and turned the crank to align the marks then there is a distinct possibility that there is valve damage. Do a compression test. Turning an engine by hand is difficult because each piston will have compression.

Mg zr common faults

Bad cabling.
You need to check earth for the motor.
If you are getting bad earth then it will overload the fuse.

My 04 Ford Focus the battery light keeps coming on & going off, have fitted a new alternator belt but it didn't solve the problem. The battery connections are good. Also the rev counter, speedo & mileage clock keep going haywire when the battery light is on. Do you think it is the alternator? Or is it some other common problem?

The odds are the alternator is the problem again. I've installed brand new alternators in the shop that turned out bad. The battery barely had enough juice the crank the car and get it running. Then, the battery was the only thing keeping the engine running with the spark plug until the battery drain completely dead.

If the alternator was working normally, the alternator would have kept the energy up and keep the spark plugs going without the battery's help.

Basically, the battery's job is to start the engine only and the alternator's job is to keep the battery charged and supply energy for the car's needs.

Car revs drop when using electrical items

To some degree this is normal, if it seems worse than before (I assume you have owned the car for awhile) then it is possible the battery is starting to go bad, if the battery is in a low state of charge then the Alternator has to work hark to keep the system voltage up, this takes engine power, up to 3 HP depending on the AMP rating of the ALternator, on bigger engines this will not even be noticed, on small engines like yours it will be noticed, one question, have you added anything that might be pulling allot of power? like a sound system amplifier? if so that is dragging the engine RPM down and you may need to upgrade the alternator to a higher amp rating unit.
