My first guess would be a weak coil or something going on with the carb.
It could have jumped time but you would probably hear noise coming from the timing chain.
Can you tell if it is not firing on one cylinder ? Checked compression ?
Too rich or too lean on the fuel mixture ?

i dont have a gauge to test compression. it acts like its only running on 3 cylinders. replaced coil, plugs, plug wires, cap an rotor an air filter. i think now im gonna replace the carb with a weber kit. only thing i can think of is the carb on it now is bad.

If the carb is the problem, you should be able to spray carb cleaner into the throat and make it run on all 4 cylinders. With the age factor, you could have valve problems.

did a compression test. have 2 dead cylinders. time for a rebuild i guess

Or the timing chain has jumped a few teeth.

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Accord Rough Idle Even After tune up

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

I recently replaced a cool pack on my 2001 dodge Durango now it is running really rough and it keeps dying and getting hot any suggestions?

The problem you describe is likely unrelated to the new coil pack. Rough running and stalling can be indicative of a fuel delivery problem, contaminated fuel, or one or more bad spark plug wires (or fouled spark plugs, but less likely). Readout all stored codes from the ECU using an ODB reader for a diagnostic starting point.

Blowing black smoke

far too much fuel not getting completely burned upon iginition.
That leads on to look at:
-fouled fuel injectors, (clean them - run injector cleaner)
-lack of air to the intake (filter and clear out tubing),
-spark plugs are fouled, (replace them, ensure wires seated correctly on plug)
-ignition power is low or partial, (ignition system module not sending enough electricity to plugs)
-ignition wires are bad, (check/replace)
-ECM is failing or getting bad sensor readings. (shop diagnosis)
-cat convertors have been removed and sensors are at fault
Its a long list -- do the easy stuff yourself, leave hard stuff to a shop diagnosis.

I'm having rough idle and smoke all of a sudden with my golf mk4 The oil warning lights up in dash. Oil level ok. Spark plugs not burning well. Replace spark plugs, changed oil filter, changed

Smoke is not a good sign. Running rough is not a good sign. Oil light not a good sign. You could have a combination of bad things, most likely expensive. Suggest professional help. Smoke can be bad rings or holed piston. Low oil pressure can be bad bearing or oil pump.

replace fuel filter, clean fuel injectors.could have bad fuel, do a code scan before buying new parts.faulty egr valve or faulty engine coolant temperature sensor cause engine run poorly.replace spark plugs and wires because if spark plug wires is bad or spark plug and ignition coil is bad that will cause rough idling misfiring and stalling you have dead cylinder not firing properly..

Engine Misfiring. Rough Idling. Losing power going up hills. Engine light flickered one day. I brought it to dealer. They said cyl 5 had a fouled spark plug. They replaced it, retuned and cleared code....

It sounds like it could be a bad coil pack that is used for number 5 cylinder. It could also be a bad spark plug wire. Does the weather seem to make a difference? Try this quick check once night time comes around. Open the hood and start the engine. Fill a bug sprayer with salt water and spray the plug wire while the engine is running. If the wire is bad, you might notice an electrical arc from the wire to the engine block. The engine will probably start running rough. If this occurs, then the wire should be replaced. If it doesn't, then the coil pack can be tested with an ohm meter. I hope this information has been helpful to you. Good luck with your problem and thank you for using Fixya.com.

91 tercel deluxe 158k idles rough like a cylinder is not functioning, computer does not show a fault code, drives fine at high rpm, gets 30gpm still. Any theories? or should I just turn the idle up and...

Pull the plugs. Sounds like you have a bad plug or a bad plug wire. Even an engine that misses will run well at high speeds but if it's missing at idle you might have a little oil on one of the plugs. I had a 91 tercel, ran great but leaked a lot of oil which would in turn foul the spark plugs. I'm sure you either have a bad wire or plug. Wouldn't mess with the idle, not sure what state you're in but it could impact emissions testing. Best of luck m'friend!

Bad idle

It's probably not the throttle position sensor, but rather the wiring that goes to the sensor. Also your plugs or plug should not be black unless it is oil fouled or carbon fouled. Carbon fouled would indicate an over rich mixture problem. Wet and black would indicate oil fouling. You need to check the oxygen sensor also. A false indication from it would could cause a rich fuel condition. Start with the wiring to the TPS switch. Last but not least check your map sensor and the vacuum hose running to it. All these items contribute to the overall fuel delivery system and how it functions.

your probably feeling a rough idle of the engine. need a tune up?

in park the engine is not loaded down, just idling at a low rpm=rough
in drive with brake on you have put some load on motor also at low rpm=rough
in drive on the road engine is at higher rpm, = smoother

generally 4 cylinder motors idle a bit rough, especially if one spark plug is not firing right or fouled or one bad spark plug wire. tune up may fix it. if it is not stumbling real bad or stalling then you can live with it.
