How do I remove rust from a plastic container

You can try soaking it in chlorine bleach, but be sure that you clear the container of any residual bleach before using it again. Chlorine bleach can react adversely with many other chemicals and/or organic substances and can be poisonous to pets and humans.

Tip

Removing trim from the interior of the vehicle

Whenever you need to remove a piece of plastic from the inside or outside of the van, you should do so carefully to avoid marring the plastic. The use of an inexpensive tool called a bone tool or trim stick can make the job safer and easier.

These can be picked up at most parts stores. Using the trim stick, you can pry the piece up gently from around the edges/corners and then release the clips holding the part by twisting the stick between the plastic and the metal it's attached to. Once you get a portion of the piece loose and can get your hands around it, you can generally reach in with both hands and begin pulling the piece out. Anything that appears brittle probably is and you need to be extra careful.

To put the piece back, especially those around the doors, make note as you remove the piece of how the weather stripping fits in relation to the piece you are pulling - does the weather strip tuck in, go over or under the plastic. Also note how parts overlap each other and take the top layer off first. The piece that goes on top will be the first off and the last one to go back on.

When working around consoles, doors and the instrument panel, look for screws, especially around arm rests and in areas that contact the floor before you begin tugging too vigorously when things don't come free.

Whenever you mess with the dash, make sure you disconnect the ground wire on the battery if you plan to go near the airbags in the steering wheel or in front of the passenger seat.

How to remove an old headlamp on a 2003 rav4?

The lamp, or the entire housing?

The lamp is tight, but not hard. It is under the rubber cap on the back of the housing. It's tight with other items, but it can be done without removing anything. Unplug the lamp, remove the rubber cap, release the wire bail, and remove the lamp.

The housing is a major pain. You need to remove the grille and the trim strip that runs under the headlights and grille. It is retained by a couple of hidden plastic clips at each end, you need a pair of small screwdrivers to depress the locking pins to release them. Wrap the screwdrivers so you don't mar the paint.

Once that is out of the way, work around the housing and remove any bolts attaching it, then work the housing out of the fender.

Can a timing chain be tightened on a 2003 sunfire? It's blowing black smoke, raps loudly when I start it then quiets down (but still raps) during idle. It also gets very loud during acceleration and...

Hi,

Timing chains cannot be tightened as such.

However, if you are experiencing chain "chatter", it is possible to reduce this noise by either:

- changing to correct viscosity engine oil
- replacing the chain "tensioner"
- Last resort: removing plastic chain guide inside timing cover (Note: only do this if it does not adversely affect the chain operation.

cheers,

Changing door speakers

The clip behind the handle requires a specialty tool available at any autoparts store. it is shaped like a U, but has little tabs on it to catch the ears of the clip.
After removing the clip, remove the plastic trim by the mirror... and a little trapdoor inside the door handle cup will have a screw in it.
The rest are just push-clips, so start at the bottom, and pull toward you... working your way around the door.

The tool looks like this...
