The engine gray smoke is from excessive fuel burning to give the engine power. I am assuming the vehcle is an automatic transmission. Sound like I would have the transmission check for a lock up torque convetor. The transmission maybe taking off in second gear and starting out in a fail safe mode. I suggest taking to the dealer or tranmission shop.

Not bad Diesel or filter, injector more likely, your better off running a KOER test,(Key on engine running test) and do a buzz test on the injector,

Start from cold, the shifting gear from one to two seems to be delayed and when it happens, it comes with a kick. The problem is less noticeable after awhile.

try using less gas when pulling away for awhile to see if you get any improvement...(the gearbox is computer controlled and may be shifting to your style of driving)could be wrong though.....

Our new Forester Diesel is ok But has no power at low revs when pulling away from standstil or moving slowly in 2nd and 3rd gears. Also main issue with this vehicle is the very slow and tractor like gear...

The forester diesel 6spd gear box is designed to replace the high low gear box so although starting off in second or third gear is possible .... puts a lot of strain on compents ie clutch/ gear box . very slow manuovering is much better carried out in 1st gear , as is moving from stationary . The engine torque is low dow the rev range high max idle is reached very quickly . The diesel engine characteristics are different to the petrol version ( I own 2.5 forester 2009 - 7.8l per km's @55000 km's). So you need to change your driving style to suit . I have test driven the 2.0l Diesel and sufficiently impressed to replace the 2009 version with the diesel .

My audi diesel tdi 2001 lost fifth gear

gear has been overloaded, 5th is an overdrive gear, not to be used for high load applications,eg.overtaking. stop using 5th gear or replace transmission.
