You have to remove the odometer cluster from the dashboard. It should be screwed of clipped into the dash.

My 2002 Saturn L100 odometer stopped working and isn't clocking miles at all.

The odometer is an electronic digital display. Digits displayed are illuminated by the odometer backlight bulb. The odometer backlight bulb brightness is controlled by class 2 messages from the BCM to adjust the display for daylight and instrument panel dimming operation. The trip odometer and total odometer will show in this display area. The push button in the lower right side of the speedometer is used to toggle between the trip and total odometer readings. To reset the trip odometer, push and hold the button down for at least two seconds. The total odometer display has six digits with no decimal display. The trip odometer has four digits including a decimal point and indicates tenths of a mile or kilometer.
The body control module (BCM) stores the vehicle mileage. If the BCM fails, the cluster will display the last valid mileage that was sent before the BCM failed. For replacement of the BCM refer to the BCM section of this service manual. Replacement instrument clusters do not require odometer pre-setting before installation. If the instrument cluster is replaced, the mileage stored in the BCM will be sent to the new cluster via serial data, and shown in the odometer display.

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

1997 f150 odometer

Normally you would just make a note of the mileage difference on the title when you sell the truck. And keep the old cluster.

Is the speedometer working?

If not, then check and replace the speedometer sensor in the gearbox.

On my instrument panel that displays how many miles I have on my truck and what direction I am driving in, it does not light up at night. At night, it displays the mileage and direction, but you can't...

The backlight for the lcd display on the odometer has burned out, it's a common problem on the newer F series trucks.
It's not normally a "serviceable" part, since the backlight is a pair of bulbs soldered into the instrument cluster circuit board. However, if you're confident in your soldering skills, you could replace the bulbs but most people replace the instrument cluster with a working one from another truck (junkyard)

If you are talking about the odometer display does not show numbers, here is a detailed instructions on where to find the cold solder joints at :

This is if the cluster lighting still works, but the display is blank. Don't know if you mean the gauges in the cluster do not work.

My 2000 Ford F150 Odometer display keeps going on and off.

There is a loose solder joint on one of the pins inside the cluster. The cluster has to be removed and disassembled in order to resolder . Try googling f150 odometer inop. There should be a step by step repair procedure on there. Good luck.

My odometer light wasn't working for 1 year and today it came on untill shut my truck off and it didn't come on again??? do i change the bulb? if so do i have to tear the dash apart

There is a LCD backlight bulb for the odometer, these are 1/4 turn bulb holders mounted from the back of the cluster.

You will need to remove the cluster to get to them.
F150online has a how to thread on Dashboard removal for the overlay change, which is quite detailed on topic of how to get the dash apart to gain access to the cluster.
Would put it all in here, but there is quite a bit of detail, and I don't want to skip a step.

2004 Ford F150 Guage Cluster LIghts are out

FROM LustyKid:

You have to remove the dash panel be careful you don't break the string for the shift indicator which slides on and off. You will need to bring the shifter (column one) to the low position so you can pull out the dash. Lots of screws different sizes, don't interchange them. Don't over tighten them either, you crack the plastic in the dash panel and strip them. Good luck
