Changed all plugs distributor cap and wires, back fires cuts out when trying to accelerate

Cuts out when throttled in park or in gear if gear and cuts out cam can be blamed. Gas motor put a quart of tranny fluid in gas tank and run it it will clean valves

Why it has no power under load, sputtering ?


Could be many things that may be causing your sputter during acceleration, have you ever changed the distributor or checked it, I mean removing the cap and checking terminals inside. Make sure all plug wire are snapped on all the way. Perhaps it needs a new fuel filter, start with the cheap stuff plugs, wires but I would look at distributor cap and change fuel filter first, stuff does need to be periodically checked and/or replaced to keep proper performance.

Could be a damaged cap or rotor, or a lean fuel mixture.
You could try running the engine with the choke partially on to rule out the lean fuel mixture theory. It could have a faulty accelerator pump in the carb, or dirt in the carb.
A cracked cap could cause the rotor to fire the wrong plugs under load.

Random misfire


If you replaced the plugs and wires you should know the engine has a distributor cap. The coil is in the bottom of the distributor.
Keep in mind it could be an injector instead of an ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on and have you checked for trouble codes ?

Why does a spark plug fire at idle but not on acceleration ?


You may need to check the ignition wires and the distributor cap/rotor.
Older ignition wires will "break down" and the spark will actually short out on nearby metal/engine block etc.
Try this test. With the car running, parking brake set, and foot firmly holding the brakes, put the car in Drive and accelerate. If the engine misses under a load, it's most likely the ignition wires..

Replace the spark plugs and wires along with a distributor cap and rotor. Be careful to leave the old wires and plug wires connected to dist.cap, just remove dist. cap from the distributor and lay aside with plug wires on it then install rotor then new cap and proceed to replace each wire for cap and spark plug one at a time so you don't mix up the spark plug wire firing order. Cap laying to the side is used for reference purpose.

get a 20 dollar haynes or chiltons manuel and find the module and coil. always change the ignition module and coil every 4 no more than -5 years to be safe.

YEP A CRACKED DISTRIBUTOR CAP.CAUSE BACK FIRING AND CROSS FIRING PLUG WIRES.BAD PLUG WIRES WILL CAUSE BACKFIRING.WRONG HEAT RANGE PLUGS WILL ALSO CAUSE BACK FIRING.

1999 nissan frontier is idling rough the truck shakes but shaking stops when the air is turned on. changed oil, spark plugs, spark plug wires and distributor cap.


This can be your Idle control valve, when you turn the air on it puts the engine under load and your computer will increase the idle automatically to prevent the engine from cutting out.
When you are standing still and the car is shaking, by touching the accelerator very softly does the shaking stop? If so check the idle control valve.
