This is your neutral safety switch - You can also try starting in N. It would need adjustment or replacement.

SOURCE: ignition switch sticks in lock position and won't

first step would be to check your key and see how worn down your teeth are on the key. If they are really warn down then you will need to replace the key. If that doesnt solve your problem you will need to replace the ignition switch

Why is my 2004 V6 Mazda Tribute Shutting down while driving?

For the hard starting, try putting the key in, turn to the ON position and verify all dashboard lights come on. If they do, from the on position, jiggle the key around while gently pressing in, then try starting. If it starts, replace the ignition switch, you can do this yourself. Sometimes it is the ignition switch and the key tumbler. Both cost under $80. For the stalling and starting, replace the throttle body, I would get this part from the dealer even if it costs a bit more. Doing these two things will save you hundreds by not going to the dealer. If this an automatic transmission?

The most commonly diagnosed component is the shifter and/or shifter solenoid on your Impala.
GM issued a bulletin on this problem. Contact your dealer, they are aware of the problem and you could be covered under warranty. Below is a copy of the bulletin.

1989 Mercury Cougar Engine will not turnover. Jiggle stick shift most of the time car will start, very intermittent...does not happen all the time. Is there a sensor attached to the gear shift that detects...

There is a switch on the side of the trans called a neutral safety switch. It only allows starting in park or neutral. the switch probably needs replacing. The next time you have a problem starting, try shifting to neutral to see if it will start. To do so, leave the key in the on position, apply the e-brake and shift into neutral.

My key is stuck in the ignition. Won't lock.

do not try to put the key in lock. if it will still start, then you will be able to replace the lock cylinder. if you rotate it to lock then you might not get it to turn again. as for the gear selector, there is a release on the shifter. some have a slot to stick a key and push down as you change gears. others you may have to take apart the console, and you will see the release lever.

1995 ford crown victoria gear locked , aleays stuck when parked at P position, need to torn off the engine to move the gear

If you are not parked on an incline when this occurs try another key as it sounds like your ignition switch is not returning to the proper position.Try jiggling the steering wheel the next time and if that works wire-brush the key if it is not BENT and try the process again.
