It is somewhat Normal Depending on how Loud the Clunking is. This is a Common Complaint on the Chevy 4x4's. I have verified this through the Dealerships here in Oklahoma and they all say the Same thing But, I am with you, They should go into 4x4 without that Clunk for as much as we pay for them.

When in auto (4wd) will get a clunking sound from drivers front (similar to shen a cv shaft clunks ina car). No clunking sound in 4wd or 2wd.

Do you have locking hubs or just the auto button inside the cab?
It isnt you transfer case it sounds like it could be your front axle or bearing.

It should tell you on the Shifter whether or not that you can Shift on the Fly. Check the Manual first if there is one in the Truck. Some Models had this and some Did not. Was an Extra from Factory Option.

My 98 chevy blazer won't shift into 4wd.

Most common problem is the vacuum diaphragm that is so inconviently mounted UNDER the battery tray. The cable that locks in the front diff is attached to it and vacuum pulls it in/out.
