Wheel locks power steering light comes on...i can not find my power steering pump to put fluid in.

There is no pump it is electric...get it checked at the dealer if you have a warranty still. If not you can still take it there or another mechanice shop..autozone won't tell you anything but to take it to the dealer.I had the same problem and was able to purchase the part through my uncles business..it cost near 500 dollars and my uncle changed it out. Took less than an hour.

I'm pretty sure your power steering is all electronic servos...no fluid at all. alas, I'll ask you to check your manual assuming you have one or call autozone or mech to have a basic diag if the light is still on.

The power steering fluid reservoir looks like a miniature bottle with a top on its only 2 -3 inches round

Replaced powersteering hose and now the truck wont turn over


If you filled the power steering reservoir with the proper fluid (usually ATF), you should let the engine run for a while and try to turn the steering wheel a bit in either direction.
The wheels will hop a bit, you will feel like the power steering isn't working for a while, then it'll start working again and so on. Keep turning the wheel lock to lock until it works smoothly.
Keep an eye on the fluid level as you may need to refill the reservoir a couple of times as the fluid will be distributed in the power steering system.
Observe any strange sounds coming from the power steering pump and make sure not to keep the steering wheel turned to the limit as it may hurt the pump.

Why is power steering fluid spewing out of the cap after replacing bad leaking power steering pump


You have Air in the Power steering System and it needs to be bleed out, And to do this if you Jack the two front wheels off the ground and Let them Hang free so there is No Load on the steering at all. please put some type of stands under the car, You will need more power steering fluid but before you add this you need to start your Car and turn the steering Wheel Slow from left to Right a few times, You will hear a wearing Notice come from the pump and you will see more fluid come out of the pump as well, that is the air trying to bleed its self out. The fluid coming out will be air rated lots of bubbles in it, Now that you have done this the Noise from the pump should start to go quite at this Point you can start to Add the New power steering fluid slow to the reservoir and keep turning the steering wheel from left to right slow (Never Fast but slow ) Have a lot of rags to clean the Mess. My 1996 maxima power steering pulley doesn't turn properly & it sqeals with a stiff steering wheel. The belt has proper tension & is new


Does kind of buzz at an idle and it whine when you try to turn? You could be low on power steering fluid. Sometimes people put the wrong fluid un it pump instead of power steering fluid which will cause problem because the fluid is too thick.
You could possibly have a pump going out on you.
Jack the car up to get the front wheels off the ground. With the engine off, turn the steering wheel lock to lock. If you feel any binding as you turn you may have a bent steering rack.

Belt provides rotation for the power steering pump, alternator, and water pump.

I have a VERY stiff steering wheel. Hard to turn much @ all. There is fluid in the steering place... What can be some possible problems? 2000 Ford Crown Victoria...


Hello! The place that you put the fluid into is opaque...You should see the fluid moving around inside...This shows that the pump is, in fact, "pumping" if it is not moving, shut off the engine... push down and up on the belt...It should only move about 3/4"...Any more then that may be a sign that the belt is loose and slipping...Here is a picture of Miss Vicky's belt...How old is the belt?? May need to replace...If you hear a whining noise from the pump when turning the wheel there is air trapped in the lines...Jack up the front...remove the fluid cap and turn the wheels lock to lock several times...Top off with fluid and try it out...No improvement ? buy a new pump...Saailer

To start with my power steering pump was making a little noise and also had bubbles in the resevoir so i put a new power steering pump on it.not a rebuilt one. when i started it up i still have the bubbles...


Section 11-00: Steering System-Service 1999 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual SERVICE PROCEDURES Purging Power Steering System of Air NOTE: If the air is not purged from the power steering system correctly, a second customer concern or pump failure could result. This condition can only occur on pre-delivery vehicles with evidence of aerated fluid or vehicles that have had steering component repair.

A whine noise heard from the power steering pump may be caused by air in the system. The following procedure must be performed whenever any of the following are performed:
  • All power steering noise complaints with evidence of aerated fluid on pre-delivery vehicles only, prior to any component repair.
  • After any power steering system component (for example, gear or hose) has been replaced and the noise is heard.
Fluid Level Top-Off Procedure
  1. Check and fill pump reservoir to dipstick full cold or remote reservoir center mark.
  1. Disable ignition by removing Fuse 10 in the fuse junction panel.
  1. Crank engine 30 seconds, check fluid level and add if required.
  1. NOTE: Do not hold steering wheel on stops.

    Crank engine 30 seconds while cycling the steering wheel lock to lock.
  1. Check fluid level and add fluid if required.
Air Purge with Vacuum External Source Procedure - 3.0L (2V) Engine, Flex Fuel and 3.4L SHO Engine
  1. Tightly insert the rubber stopper of the air evacuator assembly into pump reservoir.
  1. Reinstall Fuse 10 used to disable ignition and start vehicle.
  1. Apply 20-25 in-Hg (85-88 kPa) maximum vacuum for minimum of three minutes at idle; maintain maximum vacuum with vacuum source.
  1. Release vacuum and remove vacuum source.
  1. Add fluid to full warm or reservoir center mark.
  1. Reinstall vacuum source and apply 20-25 in-Hg (85-88 kPa) vacuum.
  1. NOTE: Do not hold steering wheel on stops.

    Cycle steering wheel from lock to lock every 30 seconds for approximately 5 minutes.
  1. Shut engine off, release vacuum and remove vacuum source.
  1. Add Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid if necessary and install dipstick or reservoir cap.
  1. NOTE: Do not hold steering wheel on stops.

    Start engine and cycle steering wheel from lock to lock every 30 seconds for approximately 5 minutes.
  1. Check for oil leaks at all connections.
  1. In severe cases it may be necessary to repeat air purge with vacuum source procedure.
Air Purge with Vacuum External Source Procedure - 3.0L (2V) and 3.0L (4V)
  1. Add Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent to approximately 2.5 cm (1 in) (make a mark) above the top of the supply line.
  1. Tightly insert the rubber stopper of the air evacuator assembly into the pump reservoir.
  1. Apply 85-88 kPa (20-25 in-Hg) maximum vacuum for a minimum of three minutes.
  1. Add Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent until the level is at the marked point.
  1. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the fluid level stabilizes.
  1. Check reservoir level and add Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent to the FULL WARM (MAX) mark.
  1. Install the number 10 fuse in the fuse junction panel. Start the engine.
  1. NOTE: The front wheels must be off the floor during lock-to-lock rotation of the steering wheel.

    NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel on stops.

    Reinstall the vacuum source and apply 85-88 kPa (20-25 in-Hg) maximum vacuum and cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock every thirty seconds for a minimum of 5 minutes.
  1. Shut the engine off, release the vacuum and remove the vacuum source.
  1. Add Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent to the FULL WARM (MAX) level. Install the dipstick or reservoir cap.
  1. NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel on stops.

    NOTE: In severe cases, it may be necessary to repeat air purge with vacuum source procedure.

    Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock every thirty seconds for approximately five minutes.

SIPHON OUT POWER STEERING FLUID WITH A SIPHONER DONT USE YOUR MOUTH TO SIPHON SWALLOWING POWER STEERING FLUID CAN BE FATAL MAKE YOU SICK.WHEN ALL POWER STEERING FLUID IS REMOVED FROM POWER STEERING PUMP.REMOVE DRIVE BELT.THEN REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP.THEN YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY THE NEW POWER STEERING PUMP DONT HAVE A PULLEY YOU HAVE TO HAVE REMOVE PULLEY FROM THE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP.YOU NEED A PUMP PULLEY REMOVER AND A PULLEY INSTALLER.YOU CAN TAKE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP AND NEW POWER STEERING PUMP TO A MACHINE SHOP.THEY WILL REMOVE PULLEY OFF OLD PUMP PRESS IT ON NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.THAT WOULD BE CHEAPER THAN BUYING THE PULLER AND INSTALLER.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE BUY NEW HIGH PRESSURE LINE O RING GOES TO PRESSURE LINE GOING INTO POWER STEERING PUMP.ONCE YOU GET NEW PUMP READY PULLEY BEEN PRESSED ON.TAKE POWER STEERING PUMP HOME PUT IT ON. BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM.WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GET NEW PUMP INSTALLED HIGH PRESSURE LINE IN PLACE.PUMP BOLTED IN DRIVE BELT ON POUR POWER STEERING FLUID IN POWER STEERING PUMP UNTIL FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING AND YOUR LEVEL ON POWER STEERING DIP STICK AT COLD LEVEL.NOW START CAR UP LET IT IDLE FOR 3 MINUTES.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID IF FLUID LEVEL DROP ADD LITTLE MORE UNTIL LEVEL ON DIP STICK ON COLD MARK DONT OVER FILL.NOW SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT FRONT OF VECHICLE. How do you bleed the power steering pump


1.check belt not too loose/tight
2.turn wheel over full lock and hold for about 30 secs then other lock.
that is about all you can do(whining noise normally associated with pump clutch,steering wheel would vibrate as you turn if it had air in system).to bleed the pump you loosen the out pipe on full lock,then tighten when fluid appears.

After I replaced the power steering pump and reservoir on my 2002 Jeep, I still get air in the system. Where could it be coming from?


Your problem could be a pressure side hose that has a rupture that only leaks in extreme conditions. Inspect to replace with new to repair problem. First make sure you have removed the pump caps off of the hose fittings. If ok, it appears you may have a stuck valve in the rack assembly. Replacing the rack should solve your problem. ------- The new pump should be self-bleeding by turning the wheels left and right. Let sit over night to release air bubbles, recheck fluid level.------ Check the tension of the drive belts on the pump, as they may be loose. The power steering pump and reservoir is located on the front of the engine driven by one of the fan belts. There is a removable cap on the top with a dipstick attached. With the engine off, fill this up to the full mark with power steering fluid. Replace the cap, start the engine and check for leaks. On the back of the pump are two hoses either one could be leaking. REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Wipe the power steering cap and area free of dirt. Remove the power steering cap.

2. Use a siphon pump to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. With a helper in the vehicle, raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

WARNING :POWER STEERING FLUID, ENGINE PARTS, AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY BE EXTREMELY HOT IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING. DO NOT START ENGINE WITH ANY LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED HOSES. DO NOT ALLOW HOSES OR POWER STEERING FLUID TO TOUCH HOT EXHAUST MANI FOLD OR CATALYST.
4. Locate the power steering cooler attached to the crossmember support plate. Slide back the clamp and disconnect one of the two power steering return hoses at the power steering oil cooler and drain fluid in an appropriate container.
5. Have the helper turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly several times to force as much fluid as possible from the steering gear.
6. Reconnect the hose at the oil cooler using the original clamp.
7. Lower vehicle so the vehicle tires are not contacting the ground.
9. For proper fluid fill and bleeding air from the power steering system:

a. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range using Mopar power steering fluid (ATF+4) p/n 05013458AA.

b. With the engine OFF and the vehicles tires off the ground, slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth (lock to lock) slowly 20 times to force fluid into the steering gear.

c. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range.

d. Start engine and let run for a few seconds, then turn oft engine.

e. Check fluid level and add if necessary.

f. Start engine, and slowly turn the steering wheel lightly contacting the left and right stops.

g. Stop the engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

h. Lower vehicle, start engine and slowly turn steering wheel lock-to-lock.

I. Stop engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

j. If fluid is extremely foamy, allow vehicle to stabilize a few minutes, then repeat steps "i" and "j" until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock.

10. Inform the vehicle owner/operator that a steering vibration may be noted for a few hundred miles until the air is completely removed from the steering system.
