Question about 1994 Volkswagen Golf
The check engine light came on and I had the vehicles diagnostics performed at a garage. The diagnosis was the solid state electronics in the distributor caused the check engine light to come on. The service manager is an old friend and he suggested I get a whole distributor unit from a junkyard as the repair at his garage was quite expensive. I did as he said got a used part, replaced it as well as the distributor cap and rotor button, and the car started and ran fine in a 5 mile test drive. The check engine light was still on so I disconnected the battery to hopefully reset the computer and shut the light out. When I went to start the car again it turned over fine but I had no spark. I have disconnected the battery many times and never had this problem. I removed a spark plug, connected it to it's ignition wire, grounded it, turned the car over, no spark. I pulled the coil wire out of the distributor and tried to get an arc turning the vehicle over but there was none. Thinking that the distributor that I had just put in had suddenly developed an electronic problem I put the old distributor back in and still had no spark. I am assuming that disconnecting the battery had something to do with the problem although it has never happened before. I have cleaned the ground strap connections to the coil and tested the continuity in the coil to dist. wire. Any suggestions?
Did you check relays and fuses?

When mine failked it was due to a weak fuel relay, which was intermittent (more off than on) Replaced fuel relay and it fdired up immedately. Checked old relay and with full 12 volts it pulled in, but anything less it would not pull the contacts home.
