2003 Kia overheating

My 2003 Kia Optima overheats when I have the headlights on and stop for a light or am in traffic. The thermostat has been changed twice and it did not solve the problem When the gage gets almost in the red zone, I can shut the car off and restart it right away and it is back to normal, but will heat up when I stop again. Only is happpening when the headlights are on. Problem first happened when the air conditioner was on but not always.

    I have to wonder if that could be the problem, I will have the mechanic that works on the car check that. I am wondering if it sticks or something. Can that be checked???

    Usually when a car overheats, you can turn on the heater full blast and the temperature will come down. That does not help in this case. When it starts climbing up it keeps going. I do not let it go into the red.I turn the car off at that point.

    The car was not overheating even though the gage was showing it was. The mechanic changed the temperature sending unit and now it seems to be okay. Thank you for your help virgilio....Daisy

    Did you check if the gage is working properly?

When your car is running you should have your head engine checked for temperatures over 200F. If its not over 200 then its not over heating and you'll have to get your gage fixed. Make sure its not over heating because you can damage your head and that's going to cost you an arm and a leg. Make sure when you get it fix that they place your thermostat back that way its working properly with your emission control.

Adjust radiator cooling fan 2003 kia optima

There is no adjustment on the cooling fan. If the car overheats, there are only a few things it could be. First, with the engine off and cool, check if the radiator is full of coolant and it looks clean.

The most likely cause of overheating is a stuck thermostat. You will need to drain the coolant and replace the thermostat. You can locate it easily by following the top radiator hose to the housing on the engine. The thermostat is under this housing.

You could also have some kind of blockage on your radiator. If there is a lot of dirt in the fins, air cannot circulate and remove the heat. Use some compressed air to blow the fins clean.

2006 kia optima overheating, no apparent leaks, top radiator hose gets hot lower never heats up, fans dont come on

I would be looking at the radiator fans themselves, especially if the fans are open
framed motors. I had the same problem with an intermittent fan on a PT cruiser,
If your A/C doesn't seem to be working right at stop lights then the fans are
most likely not operating correctly since they assist the condensing coil when idling.
Second thing I would suspect is a thermostat which is stuck closed. (This will cause overheat).
Hope this is helpful.

2003 kia optima battery light came on and headlights went dim and then out but high beams still work, dash lights are dim and the car still runs.

The alternator has stopped charging for some reason.
First check alternator drive belt is ok;
Check dash 'battery' (or 'ALT') light illuminates when ignition on and motor not running- if not, check 'ALT' lamp is not blown and connections to alternator are ok;
If all above ok, the alternator may be faulty.

YOU COULD HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET, MOST REPAIR SHOPS CAN DO A BLOCK TEST WHICH WILL TELL YOU IF HEAD GASKET IS BAD, ALSO CHECK TAIL PIPE FOR WHITE COLOR SMOKE.

Classic signs of a bad water pump. When on the freeway, the circulation of coolant through the system is increased due to the speed but once you slow down, it will tend to overheat. Please post back with any other questions or just to rate the solution. Thanks very much!
