Question about 1997 Lexus LS 400

1 Answer

Radio Dead I've got an 1997 LS-400 - best car I ever had. The radio has always worked fine - but for some of the display graphics dying out. Last week I had the timing belt replaced. I get the car back - it runs fine, but as I'm driving down the road, I see the radio is blank. I hit the power button - nothing. I brought it back to mechanic - he says it has nothing to do with him. He says "radio must have died". He checked the fuse under the hood and in fuse panel inside car - which were good. He says "coincidence". I say, "I don't believe in coincidence". I am losing my mind - driving in silence. I'm doing weird things on long trips. Can anyone out help me keep my sanity?

Nope - not a dealership, just a foreign auto shop

I have seen such coincedences as a timing belt job cause clocks not to work and such. I cant say that it was anything the mechanic did, was it an authorized dealer?

When it comes to independent auto shops, its tough to get them to take responsibility if they did something wrong, thats why most people with a car as nice as your wouldnt trust it to just any shop. Theres nothing in a timing belt job that would cause the radio to stop working, unless some connector is loose or a bad ground somewhere. There are 3 fuses you may want to check... Radio No. 1 20A, Radio No 2 7.5A, Dome 7.5A. These all send power to the radio's circuit. If all 3 are good, It would have to be an internal problem in the radio.

Lexus radio sound crackles then cuts out altogether

in radio mode, A./m and F/m
and what about other modes. Cassette, CDDA disc? all crackle
if only radio, then connect a test antenna to the radio
if not the radio is bad, or DC power to the radio is bad.

cuts out, does that mean, just the sound dies in all modes. (left and right speakers)
or the sound and even the dial lights and station tune data is dead too.

cuts means nothing with out specifics.

My 1996 LS 400 appears to have a widespread electrical problem. It happened suddenly. No dash lights, AC/heater are out, electrical windows not working. Can't shift it out of park. Engine cranks just fine....

Always go directly to the ground and check it is clean and well connected. I speak mainly here of the body grounds. Battery to starter is fine cause it cranks well and headlights are operable, it's just the battery ground to the body that's giving you trouble. When electrical problems arise, Always go directly to the grounds first.

Radio is dead wrong code entered --radio light will not come on?

You have to remove the radio to get the serial number from the back, then you need to call an Infinity dealer, read them the number and they should be able to give you the security code.

Where is the Alternator located in a 1997 Lexus LS 400

If the car ran and got you home after a jump start I doubt the alternator is bad. Check your battery. And remember never ever disconnect the battery cable with the engine running.
