Question about 1992 Toyota Camry V6

1 Answer

Alarm Problem Toyota Ed, on Nov 5, 2008 you posted a solution to a problem with the alarm on a 1993 Camry. I have a 1992 Camry and the alarm is engaging for no apparent reason. I do not have the remote. I tried following your solution (your note is below). My black box was not under the seat, but strapped to an air duct below and left of the steering column. I found where the main wiring harness had been interrupted and plugged those two connectors back together. I did not find a red and green wire going up under the steering column. There's a solid green wire with a crimp. Is that the one? Also, there are more wires that come from the box and go down the far left side of the car past the fuse box and the hood release. I can't really tell where they are plugged in and am not sure if they matter (maybe that's where the box get's power from?). Can you help at all? Thanks and by the way my car is not a V6, just a 4 cylinder and the alarm was listed on the window sticker. YOUR PREVIOUS SOLUTION: First, remove the black box from the security wiring harness; 3 connectors. Then, remove the plastic moulding on the driver side rocker, the kickpanel, the panel under the steering column, and the lower dash cover. Now, pull the harness towards you, pulling it under the seat carpet. Pull out all of the wiring, and then observe where the connectors plug into the factory dash harness. Unplug the wire harness that you just pulled out, connector byconnector. Then, plug the factory harness connectors back in (thescurity harness simply interupts the factory harness), one by one. You will see a red & green wire going up under the steering column. Find the wire crimp and remove the wire. Remove the ground wire from the ground bolt. Make sure that the entiresecurity harness is disconnected, and all of the factory connectors areconnected in the place of the now-removed security harness. Throw the black box and the security wire away. Note: if you just remove the black box, the car will not start; you have to remove everything. This may sound like a lot of work, but, it really is not hard, nor is it time consuming

I am having the same issue with my 1992 Toyota Camry XLE. The alarm goes off if I enter the driver side of the car and don't start it right away. It gives me like maybe 30 sec. to a minute to put the key in the ignition and start the car before the alarm starts sounding. It is totally annoying and I cannot seem to make it stop. I am going to try what you suggested here. THANK YOU!!!

Toyota Ed ... I haven't figured out how to continue a discussion thread, so I'll post this as a "same problem".

I disconnected the green wire and the wires that went behind the trund release. You were right: some went to a ground bolt, others went to the disable switch, still others were jumpered off other wires. A brown wire went all the way back into the trunk! They are all now disconnected (including a white and black wire that was jumpered off a wire behind the steering column). I was then able to pull the entire alarm wiring harness out.

I had to jump start the car and it ran fine except for one strange thing. Whenever I put the brake on, the radio would cut out and the dash lights would dim momentarily.

I drove for 20 minutes or so, came home, shut the engine off and immediately tried to start it. NOTHING! The warning lights and the door open chime all came on like they normally would, but no cranking. I have had the battery checked and it is good.

    Can you help?

The green wire with the crimp needs to go away. This is the wire that allows the alarm computer to beep the horn when the system is activated.

The wires that go past the hood release is probably a power and a ground bolt. Pull up the rocker panel trim, and then pull off the kick panel. Some of those alarms used another connector over behind the kickpanel, and also, some had a "hood switch". All of the wiring needs to go away. You can cut the wires to the hood switch, if it has one.

Please get back to me if you need more assistance.
A FixYa rating would be greatly appreciated.

Security alarm

Look under the driver side seat for a black box, with several wires going to it. This is the controller for the security system. Please do NOT unplug the wires. You car will NOT start if you do. Advise if the box is there, and I will provide info to disable the system.
