SOURCE: replace rack/pinion

The book calls for about 5 hours labor with a lift, air tools, and experience. It's a tough job. Here are a few tips, Take the lines loose from the rack; not the pump. With the tires off, Remove the nuts from the outer tie rods.Run the nuts back on the tie rods stud and hit the steering knuckle where the tie rod's stud goes through. This will free the stud. Remove the steering shaft from the rack.(take the bolt all the way out.Remove rack mounting bolts. Twist, pull ****,and fight the rack out the side of the car with the most room. The new rack will have inner tie rods already installed. Make sure the new rack is centered.(Turn left then right count the turns then center same # of turns from left to right). Count the threads or measure from the outer tie rod's jam nut to the last thread on the inner tie rod.(you can leave the jam nut in place and take the outer tie rod off and measure from the jam nut to the end of the rod.)Install the outer tie rods. Replace rack in car. hook up steering shaft.Bolt up rack. Hook up lines. Add fluid and work rack back and forth to bleed air. recheck fluid. Have it aligned. (or just take it to a shop. This job is going to be a nightmare!!!)

SOURCE: rack and pinion leak

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

SOURCE: rack and pinion removal and installation

it is sort of a strange deal but you have to remove the cowl and the wiper assembly and access it through there. You can get the step by step instructions from autozone

Can not separate the intermediate shaft assembly from rack and pinion

After removing the pinch bolt and nut it is usually necessary to tap in a small chisel or large screwdriver to open up the slot sufficient for removal. Sometimes burrs hold components together and sometimes there is a corrosion bond so a squirt of penetrating oil is a good idea too.

Tip

Improve power steering when rack and pinion starts binding.

One of the things you can try on your car before replacing the rack and pinion if your steering starts to bind or hard steering is to treat your PS fluid. I bought a 12 oz. container of Lucas oil, drained the exising PS fluid from my resevoir with a kitchen baster and replaced the fluid with the container of Lucas oil. Within a few days, the steering improvement was quite noticable. I did still need to replace the rack and pinion since it was worn and binding up but the Lucas oil really improved the steering ease and performance. I'd suggest this step first before any major part replacements, like PS pump or the rack and pinion. It may help save $$ The bottle of Lucas oil was $11.00 at a local auto parts outlet.

Does the rack and pinion need to be removed to replace the inner tie rods on my 2006 Sienna?

No, it will not usually need to be removed. But a special tool is required for removing and replacing the inner tie rods. You can buy this special tool, or have a shop do it.

My toyota camry steering went very stiff

Unless the rack and pinion gears are slipping (jumping a cog), then try putting oil on the universal joint in the steering column just above the rack & pinion. Two mechanics wanted to change the rack & pinion for $900 or the "Yoke" (whatever that is) but a generous squirt of oil on the U jont fixed the problem for my 2002 Camry!

There is power steering fluid dripping from the passenger side boot covering the rod that connects to the wheel. Could a simple replacement of the boot be the fix, or is there a problem with the main unit...

No, the boot only keeps dust out of the inner tie rod joint--it is not intended to hold back fluid. The rack will have to be rebuilt with new seals. Sorry. :o(

Replacing power steering hose and rack and pinion steering

when it comes to the power steering hose I would say just do it yourself. As for the rack and pinion it will probably cost you quite a few hours of labor. anywhere from 5-9. Its up to you!
