If you can't hear the fuel pump when you turn the key to the on position trying to build up fuel pressure, it is most likely either a voltage issue at the fuel pump or you need to replace the fuel pump. Have you checked your fuel filter? Try turning on the key without engaging the starter and see if you hear the whine of the fuel pump.

you may also check your fuel pressure module...it is located behind your throttle body, near the firewall. I was able to isolate a vacume leak in that same area with the same symtoms before starting the car, although mine runs an idle ok, it hesitates and will not run smoothly down the road...in my case, it still may also be a failing fuel pump...the best analogy to describe is like sucking on a pop straw that is cracked, you can see the pop comming up the straw, but it's not enough to quench the thirst

It could be the main relay and/or the ecm. Or it could be the distributor timing off.
Could be the ignition switch. Honda issued a recall on 1997 CRV ignitions in 2002.
Go to www.ahm-ownerlink.com and under quick tasks, click on the Get Recall Information.
