Question about 2001 Cadillac Catera

Inner tie rods are worn out, wondering if its a good idea to replace both inner an outer tie rods at once or does it matter ?

The tie rods both do the same amount of work so if one is faulty the other one will not be far behind Replace both sides is best as steering problems are a safety issue.

    whats the worst case scenario in the event they arent replaced in time to prevent further wear??

    They'll get worse on wearing tires over time. When the tie rod really gets sloppy, it can pop off. Don't wait TOO long!

    When you have worn inner tie rods on a car over 8 years old you replace the enitre steering rack period. It comes with new inner tie rods

Need to replace inner tie rod on a 1998 ford ranger two wheel drive , driver side . engine size is 2.5. do i have to take outer tie rod off as well?


webbraymond2, Yes, you have to remove the outer tie to access the inner tie rod. When you do this, count the rotations of the tie rod as this will have to be replaced when the new inner tie rod is installed. Counting the rotations will allow you to put the outer tie rod close to where it was when you started the job. You are changing the toe setting when you have to replace either the inner or outer tie rod. You need to access and remove the jamb nut and boot before you can access the inner tie rod and this is why the outer needs to be removed first. A wheel alignment is advised after you finish the job. The left side tie rod seems to have slop on the rack & pinion side. Tie rod outter end is good.what is it?

If you go to an alignment only shop, not some
chain store, with an alignment rack,they will
change it for you, if it can be done

Then you have to set all the front end adjustments

Don't let them pitch you, a complete rack assy
Moog-- makes those inner tie rods, and you put your
good outer joint on it

How do i loosen the outer tie rod end to remove it from the bushing once tie rod is out of streeing knuckle i know it will need to be aligined and i need to count treads when putting new outer tie rod end...


You may need a propane torch to heat up the nut on end of outer tie rod. With tie rod still attached to steering knuckle try to loosen the outer tie rod end nut that is connected to inner tie rod. Pull tie rod end back out of knuckle. Use pliers or vise grips to hold inner tie rod end while turning outer tie rod end to the left.

How to install inner and outer tie rods on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica - I waqs told buy a trusted local mechanic that I need to replace 3 of the 4 tie rods. Might as as well replace all 4, but how hard is it...


You will need to rent or borrow in inner tie rod tool but here are the directions.
1. Break the jam nut on inner tie rod to outer loose.
2. Remove nut from outer tie rod attaching it to steering knuckle.
3. Use hammer to get tie rod out of knuckle.
4. Unscrew outer tie rod then jam nut
5. Remove clamp from boot and slide off inner tie rod.
6. Using side cutter or hammer and chisel break off metal clamp on the inside of inner tie rod boot.
7. Using inner tie rod tool, unscrew inner tie rod from rack and pinion
8. Reinstall parts and have it aligned

Yes degreaser will not hurt it. The outer tie rod is retained only by one nut that connects it to the inner tie rod.Once you have this loosen just turn the outer tie rod to the left to remove it from the inner tie rod.

Repair inner tie rod end of 1997 dodge avenger


f734654.gif #3 is the inner tie rod and it is simply screwed into each end of the steering rack. Raise and support the car remove the wheel and you should see where it is connected to the outer tie rod. There is a lock nut that you'll need to loosen slightly to get the tie rod off. You will need to get a wheel alignment once done but by slightly loosening the lock nut, you have a good reference of how it should be once done. Once loose, you should be able to turn the tie rod by using a wrench on the flattened area on the rod. Once disconnected from the outer tie rod end, you should be able to remove the dust boot covering the inner tie rod connection. Mine came right apart so hope you have no problems. After you have it out, here is where the loosened locknut comes into play. Put the new and old tie rod side by side, line up the ends that attach to the rack and pinion then mark the new rod so you know how far to put the lock nut on the new tie rod. Simply tightly screw the new one onto the rack and pinion put the boot back, screw on the lock nut to the mark then attach the tie rod to the outer tie rod end up to the lock nut then tighten the lock nut against the outer end. Get the tire back on, lower the car and Voila, done. Now go get an alignment.

Any info on tie rods


You have left and right inner tie rods and outer tie rods on your car.
You also have lower ball joints which can wear loose too....not to mention the left and right struts and upper strut bearings.

A cheap (China) tie rod may last only a year.(plastic inner wear points)
A good quality tie rod may last 10.(nylon and/or metal wear points)

Tie rod broke and I am trying to remove the old one but can't figure it out. I have removed the nut from the outer tie rod but it still does not come off the tire. The inner tie rod I have no idea how to...


The tie rod close to the tire. Your have to get a pitch fork and a hammer.
If you don't have a pitch fork,
Then hit the spindle to make that outter tie rod end drop down.
make sure the bolt is remove.
Little hammer is not going to work you will need like a 32oz .
Once you have it loosing you will have to go counter-clock wise turn to remove the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod, Remember count the turn very important to install it back. for you Toe Alignment.


The inner tie rod end will you will need a tool call tie rod end removal & install. It's a long tube with specail clip to removal & install.
Maybe you can rent it. Or buy it habor freight tools or something.

There is a tool that you can use that will make it easier for you. To get to the tie rod end, remove the wheel and take the outer tie rod end loose from the hub. You will have to use a hammer and hit the socket where the end goes into the hub to free it up. Once you have the tie rod loose from the hub, loosen the nut behind the outer tie rod end. Count the revolutions as you unscrew the outer end off and write te number down so you will know how far to put it back on. This will save your alignment. Now, the end that is still there is your inner tie rod end. You will have to undo the bellows boot to get to the nut. The tool will slide over the end and secure onto the nut. Now you just unscrew this and replace with you new inner tie rod end.
