It sounds like the electric switch motor, or the relay that powers the motor. Remember 4wd high can be switched at any time below a certain speed(55mph?) but for 4wd Low you must be stopped with the transmission in neutral before it will engage. You might try tapping on either the relay or the motor while someone else works the switch...

Is your battery light on the dash on? When my alternator died, my hubs were auto locking due to low voltage in the 4wd selector even though 2wd was selected. The problem corrected itself when I installed a new alternator.

F250 4X4 MANUAL HUBS WILL NOT ENGAGE ALSO HAVING

im not sure if a 2000 f150 and a 2000 f250 have the exact steering column, but incase it is then check at the base of the column inside and you may see a triangler shape bracket that the shift cable connects to,there will be 2 torque screws holding the bracket to the column, either a t-20 or t-25 not sure, they may be loose so the shifter will be sloppy...my 2000 f150 had that problem and i stumbled upon it,it seems to be a 2000 year issue...about the manual hubs, try locking them in and drive forward and reverse very slow a few times,if they lock in then they are sticky and it takes time for the spring inside to push then together.lock the hubs in first, then after a while shift to 4x4,because if they are just sticky,it may strip the teeth on the lockouts from the axel turning against the inside of the lockout.

When i turn on heat or ac it runs on the defrost setting but wont shift to the vent or floor until the 4 wheel drive knob gets turned on 1999 f250 I heard this was a common problem is it the switch for 4x4...

you have a vacum leak in the 4x4 engagement system. there is a vacum solenoid on the passenger side next to the battery. should have 3 hoses to it I believe. check those hoses for cracks they go all the way to both front wheels. the ones in the wheel wells are usually messed up. if all hoses are good hook up a hand held vacum pump to each wheel they should hold about 15 hg on the vacum guage if not your wheel hub seals are leaking.

My 4x4 won't engage except if u get out and lock the hubs on my f-350 2006

you must have those vacume operated automatic locking hubs that can be manuely locked.switch the truck to 4x4 operation. and get behind the front wheels ,pull of the vacume hose at the back of the spindle to see if engine vacume is getting down to the hubs at all.with the truck running you should have 18 to 20 inchs of vacume at each hose. if no vacume is felt. check the soleinoid behind the right head light for switching vacume down to the spindles. if there is vacume the problem is in the hubs themselves.
