First you need to know what tranny you have,in alot of the newer gm trannies they have electrical components that go out causing you to lose gears these are not nearly as expensive as a whole tranny and if it is the tranny a rebuild maybe cheaper in the log run,warrenties ussually dont cover labor charges

which seems to work as i have two answers here but i would check with the code reader web site ,have you checked the oil level ,start engine handbrake on and brick behind the drive wheels .select reverse and then check oil level ,standard dextronII is all you need to top up
