Normally in the thermostat housing or very close by check by removing the wire and have some watch the temp gauge for you as to touch the terminal to the head I fthe gauge responds quickly the gauge is ok. remove and replace the sender unit

I change the temperature sensor but the needle does not move how can I change the needle? This is a 95 ford Econoline 350


you have probably been misinformed. The needle on the temperature gauge is controlled by the temperature SENDER unit ( not the temperature SENSOR unit) The sender unit is a single wire unit that is a resistance unit affected by heat of the coolant, The hotter the coolant the less resistance the higher the reading
The temperature sensor unit is a 2 wire unit that tells the ECM when to switch on the fan, when to go into limp mode if overheating and when to adjust the air/fuel mixture as the coolant warms up

If the temp gauge is reading 160 when the engine is warmed up, the problem could be air in the cooling system, a faulty sending unit, or gauge.

2000 malibu runs hot if not warmed up


How do you know it gets hot? Are you going by the temperature gauge on the dash? Or have you checked under the hood and found out the engine really is running hot? ...Reason I ask is, something just doesn't sound right in your description. After just 5 minutes from starting and driving away, the engine would not yet be at normal operating temperature. That would explain the heater not yet warm. But the temp. gauge says hot?
If so, I would replace the temperature sending unit on the engine. the one for the dash gauge, and see if that was the problem-not reading the temp. accurately.
Couple of other things: Are you sure you got all the air out of the coolant system? Start the car with the radiator cap off and let it run until the engine is warmed up fully, then shut it off and install the cap. Does your reservoir tank stay about half full where it should be, between the full-hot and full-cold marks?
If your problem persists. I would have the coolant system pressure tested, and see if you could get a true temperature reading of the coolant when it seems to be running hot.

On my 1995 Camaro 5.7 LTI Low coolant light comes on after car warms up---coolant level is fine and car does not over heat-- runs at about 180 degrees


Since the car does not over heat and the coolant is not low there is a good chance that the sending unit is bad. If that is the case you really don't have anything to worry about. Just be sure to keep an eye on your actual temperature gauge. Those lights are hardly ever right but your gauge is almost always accurate. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. My cadillac deville(2001)runs smooth,but it runs hot.what is the problem?


Insufficient or weak coolant, bad thermostat (out of range), cooling fan not running or kicking into 2nd phase with A/C on, bad temperature sensor, bad temperature sending unit.(false guage reading).
Start by checking your coolant level and color (nice and green or orange? not rusty looking?) if rusty looking, flush coolant system and refill with recommended coolant type of 50/50 mixture.

Check specific gravity of coolant to see if the mixture is weak.

Verify cooling fan is kicking on after engine reaches operating temperature with engine idling.

Replace thermostat.

Measure resistance of temperature sensor. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

Measure voltage at sending unit. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

One of those should solve it, I always lean toward weak coolant and bad thermostat. I have seen bad water pumps do that too.

To test it:

Perform this test on a cold or cool engine.
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Unplug the electrical wiring from the sending unit.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminal and the sending unit's metal body
    1. Infinite resistance or zero resistance: the sending unit is bad, replace the sender with a new one.
    2. Other than infinite or zero resistance: continue test.
  4. Remove the temperature sender from the engine.
  5. Position the sending unit so the metal shaft (opposite end from the electrical connectors) is in a pot of water. Make sure that the electrical connector is not submerged and only the tip of the sending unit's body is in the water.
  6. Heat the pot of water at a medium rate. While the water is warming, continue to measure the resistance of the terminal and the metal body of the sending unit:
    1. As the water warms up, the resistance goes down in a steady manner: the sending unit is good.
    2. As the water warms up, the resistance does not change or changes in erratic jumps: the sender is bad, replace it with a new one.
  7. Install the good or new sending unit into the engine, then connect the negative battery cable.
  1. With the engine cold, remove the ECT sensor.
  2. Immerse the tip of the sensor in container of water.
  3. Connect a digital ohmmeter to the two terminals of the sensor.
  4. Using a calibrated thermometer, compare the resistance of the sensor to the temperature of the water. Refer to the sensor resistance illustration.
  5. Repeat the test at two other temperature points, heating or cooling the water as necessary.
  6. If the sensor does not meet specification, it must be replaced.

ok mine did this untill i got an air pocket out of the coolent system then it was find.

Heating System


The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the intake manifold and sends engine temperature information to the ECM. The ECM supplies 5 volts to the coolant temperature sensor circuit. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes. When the sensor is cold (internal resistance high), the ECM monitors a high signal voltage which it interprets as a cold engine. As the sensor warms (internal resistance low), the ECM monitors a low signal voltage which it interprets as warm engine.

See Figures 3 and 4
  1. Remove the ECT sensor from the vehicle.
  2. Immerse the tip of the sensor in container of water.
