My 1997 Nissan had some misfiring issues. Was popping and backfiring in the intake. Not all the time though. Of course it started near the beginning of a long road trip. I took it to Nissan in PG. They had it for 3 days, replaced plugs, wires, rotor, distributor, and all kinds of other checks. Still did it after $1000 of work. We headed home and being mechanically inclined I started with the basics. Took off the new distributor cap thinking maybe the coil was arcing out. After 3 minutes and looking for black arc marks between the coil and housing I noticed bits of chewed up metal below. The bearing was totally shot in the distributor. Well I guess they just over looked it, for $120 an hour. I ordered a brand new distributor assembly from NAPA and it took 15 minutes to change it and set the timing. Its been 4 months and its still going great (knock on wood).

I could have just changed the bearing for $20 too but with 250000km. I didn't cheap out and replaced the whole thing.

SOURCE: how to replace a knock sensor on nissan pathfinder

It's located deep in the valley! Under the "LOWER intake manifold". copy and paste this link in your browser, or try clicking on it. It may be helpful to you.

http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/pathfinder/7890-3-3l-knock-sensor-relocation.html

I didn't find this link until after I had already disassembled my truck. This is the hardest job that I've taken on thus far, hope I can put it all back together properly. I changed the gaskets on the valve covers since I had everything off.
To answer your question: It's under your lower intake manifold, so it's a hard job!

SOURCE: 1996 Nissan Maxima 2.5 V6 Engine Knock sensor

The knock sensor is a major pain in the a..s to change I would suggest taking it to a reputable shop for a second opinion to see if they realy performed the work. Also with OBD11 (2) diagnostics if you have multiple misfires its not the wires its something else, also if you got a code for a misfire it would be specific as to which cylinder is misfiring. My best guess would be to get your coil checked.

V6 3.3L The sensor is located underneath the air intake manifold on top of the engine block. This should take an experienced mechanic about 3-4 hours to replace.
