The rev is going up & down on idle & when driving

The rev. of my bmw 318i, 1998 model, sedan is going up & down on idle and when driving. Also, the exust smells of un-burnt fuel. is this a mass air sensor problem? could it also be 'cause of errors in the cars computer system? please help.

My 1995 318i (4 cylinder) does similar things - starts OK but then as its warming up it starts to idle roughly , and when warmer on the highway it'll surge. At stop signs it'll almost stall at times. The chek engine light goes on and off at various times. The MAF has been replaced when it gave me trouble about 4 months ago.
This problem is driving me crazy!!

Have you checked your air inlet manifold for any leakages by spraying WD40 around each portall bolted to the cylinderhead gasket, check for vacuum air pipes deterioration.make sure the engine is running first ,then spray WD40 to check that the engine speed should increase.it sounds like your engine is haveing problems breathing due to heavy hydro carbons increasing./and your CO2% is dropping.

After driving for short distance it won't start I have tried every thing on the book on my BMw 318i m40 1992 model

have you tried having the fault codes reading section of the book
It is the first line of the trouble shooting
it appears that there is an electronic part break down for over heating
it could be in the ignition control module, ECM, coil/s, immobilizer
try exchanging the ECM with a known good one and fix any faults shown on the code scanner

MY 2000 BMW 318I SE IS NOT ACCELERATING PROPERLY WHEN STARTING FROM COLD I PUT MY FOOT DOWN BUT THE CAR JUST JUDDERS ALONG IF I STOP AND REV THE ENGINE PAST 5000 IT THEN SEEMS OK AFTER ALSO THE EMISSION...

There isn't a car out there that likes to be put in drive as soon as it is started. Mine especialy. I give it at least 30 seconds to warm while I am adjusting evrything and away I go. Runs like a champ. Let it warm up for a couple of minutes from a cold start.

You need to make sure you have a good drive belt and verify that the tension is working,if all seems normal then get the alternator or the wiring to it tested.

1992 auto 318i bmw judders at low revs

Hello there

If you drive an automatic and it starts to judder at low speeds than that means you transmission isn't down shifting as the speed is reduced. In the first instance you should get your transmission oil changed.

Hope this helps and please don't forget to rate me.
