Get the correct length belt ( genuine is best) as if the belt is not right getting it back on will be troublesome.loosen off the idler puller adjustment (right off) and fit new belt. If it is too short or too long you most likely have not followed the correct method of fitting so look for a diagrm in the handbook.

What if the fan belt break while driving

Dan h described what would happen if your timing belt/chain broke.. fortunately the consiquences aren't as dire if your SERPENTINE belt snaps. Most vehicles have the following systems or devices powered by the front engine accessory drive belt (FEAD belt)
AC compressor
Power steering pump
Alternator
Fan (some vehicles do and some don't)
Water pump

All but one of these things can be lived without, at least for a short time. If your belt snaps and your water pump stops your engine will overheat in no time flat., say you're cruising through a rural area and your belt snaps a mile and a half away from the next town, your car will get you there, but you had better turn it off once you get into town. After a belt snaps you've got 2 miles before you absolutely need to shut your car down to avoid damage.

My h2, 2004 suddenly overheated very rapidly, only two days after being serviced. The air conditioning made a high pitched squeaking sound minutes before this happened. Engine then shut down and coolant...

Sounds like the ac compressor locked up and the belt snapped from rubbing on it. Once the belt snaps, the water pump stops and the engine overhears.

My timing belt snapped and I took it to a mechanic. he said that the belt snap the piston head and the bent the valves. I am wanting second opinion, and would like to know if the timing belt is connected...

The pistons will hit and bend the valves if the timing belt snaps because they are very close. The alternator does not connect to the timing belt, there is a separate belt that runs the alternator.

A technician stated my alternator belt has a slight crack...how long can I continue to drive with the crack

Hi,
Nobody can tell when that alternator belt will snap, but the crack means its time to change it.
For precautionary and preventive maintenance purposes, the mechanic just advises you to change that belt before it will snap in the middle of nowhere.
If I were you I will follow the advise!
Hope that clears all the doubts!
Thank you for using Fixya!

How do i replace the altenator

1. Remove the plastic air intake system which includes the air filter, 1 vacuum hose, the tube that runs to the carb, the tube that runs off to the left. There are three bolts that hold the bottom of the air filter housing on. Most of this system is a snap together assembly. Just pull it apart.

2. The alternator will have two bolts on the front bottom. The left one is a double sided bolt and the right one is a pass through bolt with a nut on the back. Stick a wrench or a short socket wrench on the nut behind the alternator and remove the pass through bolt from the front. Then remove the double sided bolt from the left side.

3. This leaves the alternator loose and being held by the belt. remove the belt from the alternator and wiggle and jiggle the alternator out of the mounting area (very tight squeeze to get it out). You can put a larger size can of fruit or something in the place of the alternator to hold the belt in place so you can remember how it looks.

4. You will need to loosen the belt tensioner to put the belt on the new alternator. Remove the can of fruit if you chose to do that but be careful to not accidentally remove the belt from the 5 or 6 different places it passes through. Place the new alternator, put in the bolts and tighten. Loosen the tensioner and put the belt on. Tighten the tensioner and adjust as needed. Replace the entire air intake system by snapping it all back together and bolting it in one piece at a time.

I have a 1986 Olds Cutlass Ciera with a 2.5l 4

Remove the belt from any pulley. Go from pulley to pulley and make sure they are all free wheeling obviously you won't be able to turn the crank pulley. Spin your alternator pulley and listen to it. It should be silent and smoothe. If you hear any bearing noise from the tensioner, the alternator, the AC comppresor, I would do this soon, you've spent on belts what an alternator would cost. Also check the idler pulley if this is a serpentine type belt.

My car is a VW golf Gti mk3 8v 2.0L, Alternator / water pump drive belt has snapped and been lost. I have new belt but I'm unsure of routing around the 3 pulleys. does the alternator act as the tensioner??

loosen the alternator and push the alternator to-wards the engine, put your new belt on ,fitting around the 3 pulleys once fitted look and see that the belt is in line.If your happy the belt is lined put a small bar between the engine and alternator and force the alternator out towards the front this should tension your belt tighten bolts on alternator.;at the longest point between two pullys in the middle of the belt move belt up and down with fingers if tension is right it should not move more than about 150ml,hope this helps you.adrian
