If the smell is like burning oil or really hot coolant. you may have killed the motor. If it smells like burning plastic ,look for shorthing wires around the exhaust manifold battery, alternator or place that a wire could be burnt. If a rubber smell check for belt failure.

Jimny running fine - started screeching like belt slipping - after 2-3 miles car died when pulled to a stop - strong burning smell - won't restart - ignition turns but no starter engages - 1996 model

Engine may have slipped off mounts and fan may be rubbing a hose. This would stop when you stop, be reason for water loss and burning smell . Check hoses around front of engine, if this is the problem then engine mounts need replacing and hoses.

My car jerks/ hiccups when I accelerate, and the engine shakes when I turn it on.

timing belt jumped a tooth?,causing burning smell from engine overheating?????????. Out of ignition timing causes erratic/missing/jerking and possibly die. All this " may be " a coincidence from heater core repair.

My 2011 civic has a burnt coolant smell after driving it. Dealer said engine is fine and there is no leak. Yet they said the smell is burning coolant?

You can have them put a die into the coolant. After driving for a little bit they will be able to look for the traces the die leaves behind with a uv light.

When my car is at a dead stop the car will make a loud noise from engine and sputter and die. I start back up and it works fine..it also goes away if you drive the car. A weird plastic burning smell...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the problem can be on the MAF (mass air flow) sensor. If the MAF is faulty there will be vacuum irregularities that's why the car stalls. Regarding the burning smell, please check the relays and fuse inline with the fender or the firewall. They are the ones that can burn or simply check the wires on the engine if there are burnt wires.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My car just died while i was driving it.. had a funny smell through the vents.. no other warning signs.. Its not battery issues or altenator.. its somethign to do with the engine.. car wont even start now.

If the smell is like burn rubber, and the car crank fast and wines the problem is the timing belt.

if the smell is like electrical burn and the car do not start anymore the problem is alternator.

if the drive belts are broke, one of the pulleys is locked, spin them to see which one is bad.

good look amigo.

Engine runs rough, or dies when the defroster is turned on!

get your heater core checked out. the heater core is right by the blower motor and if its busted it will blow the smell into your car.
