You probably have a ground wire not grounding properly, check your battery ground cable, clean it at both ends make sure its getting good ground, also check under car for a flat woven ground wire from engine to body, make sure its not rusted off, also does your vehichle have a distributor cap and rotor ? if so it might have moisture in it and need to be dried out

josie you were correct on the grd strap it was almost completely rusted off i could see where it attached to chassis but didnt see yet where it connected to engine it looks like it attached at base of steering column does that sound correct. also im getting new starter today just because old one very rusted corroded

  • josie casavan Jan 20, 2013

im not sure if it would go there, keep checking it could be up higher by the direction the strap goes, ask at auto parts store to see picture of it on their diagram if you cant find it

You say it has been sitting for a year!....ok then its probably you gas that got bad over time. Trying syphoning all you gas out and putting new gas in if it does not start, then you fuel pump probably went bad. You can try to spray brake cleaner or carb cleaner in the throttle body and trying starting it....if it starts then dies, its your Fuel Pump.

Remove all the sparkplugs and turn the engine over by just the starter for a few seconds to get oil pumping as you do this, look for any fluids to "pump" out of the spark plug holes..see if any antifreeze or oil shoots out..this liquid will stop the engine from turning over but it can be blown out..also the starter solenoid may not be working if the engine does not engage at all, try connecting a 10 ap charger to the vehicle in place of the battery,,and listen for a buzzing or humming this may indicate a rusted solid relay somewhere ..locate and replace it..what year of car...repost please..

SOURCE: 2000 GMC Jimmy won't start

Hi: Have run into same type of problem, turned out to be a dead or very battery. Has nothing to do with the ignitin switch. With a low battery have also had trouble getting the key out of a 95 Jimmy. Boost unit to get running then discommect battery, if unit stall right away replace alternator, if stays running replace battery. If you get the unit runnimg and try to drive it as is you should find lacks power and wants to stall.

SOURCE: obd 2 connector does not work with any code scanner

HI there....Check to see if the code reader is a CAN OBD 2 code reader. If it is only OBD2 , that may be the problem. In 2003 Some vehicle manufacturers ( ford,Gm,Mazda and Saab) began using a new computer protocol called Controller Area Network (CAN) with the OBD2 and if your vehicle is CAN OBD 2 the simple OBD2 code reader will not work.Contact your local dealer to determine if you vehicle is CAN or not or find a code reader that is CAN OBD2 capable. Hope this helps you out

SOURCE: Lack of power when accelerating

You really should have a code check done. There are numerous items that can give you similar symptoms. Two places to look are the fuel filter (usually overlooked till they gum up, and the throttle position sensor (but test it first with an ohmeter. You will need a manual (vehicle specific ones are available at most larger parts stores and most of those stores also do code testing free)

I wouldn't think catalytic converter, without it giving some indication that it was going bad, but without testing it is hard to say.
When it cranks and won't start, check for battery voltage to the coil on the dark green wire, with key ON. If you have power at the coil, it might be a bad coil. If no power to the coil, it could be a Crank Position Sensor or the Cam Position Sensor inside the distributor. If one of those is bad, it can stop the computer from sending power to the coil.
Good luck.

1996 5 speed honda accord. sat for a year. put in new battery. everything lights up, but car wont start. never had previous problem.

Are you saying the car turns over (cranks) but it does not start? Or, the car is Not turning over?
If it is cranking over but not starting, and it ran fine before sitting for the year, it may be water/moisture in the gas. Try some dry gas, and/or Carb-fuel injection cleaner in your gas tank.

88 190E has been sitting for over a year, wont start. Have cleaned out the fuel, still wont start. An amituir mechanic said it needed a fuel pump and or a fuel relay. (Very costly) Any advice? The car ran...

When a vehicle has been left for a long time without being started it will need the following: New fuel, New battery, change of engine oil, possibly transmission oil and brake fluid as well. All fluids in the engine will tend to settle and separate out over time if left. Ideally you start the engine weekly if you put a car aside.
