there is a central diff(called a TORSEN diff)and yes it has splines on the output shaft.NOW this IS a front wheel drive car that goes into 4wd when traction to the front is compromised(slipping)they are not allowed to call it "quattro"or 4wd as its NOT.jack up the rear and block the front wheels,start the engine and put it into gear,the rear wheels should turn if the central diff is operating correctly.if not the best solution is to get a diagnostic done at a subaru dealer(you can then decide if you are capable of fixing it yourself or are willing for them to fix it)It is not as simple a system as some people would make out as you have electronics to control the front/rear traction.and the diagnostic computer they use is invaluable.AND EXPENSIVE.

I'm not sure about what gasket to check, but I've always left my manual tranny's connected to the transaxles and removed the axles at the transaxle. This made simpler by popping the ball joints out, thus allowing the hub assembly to swing away. Hope this helps.

Well, you have made our job easy with this one and very much diagnosed the car all by yourslef,, you are absolutely correct...it definetly sounds like a rear diff problem, and it is ok to drive with FWD only and have the rear unlocked..........just keep an eye on it that you dont start hearing other noises....as worst case scenario, it could be gear related and even though it is not locked in AWD, the gears/shafts are still turning.......so as long as it stays quiet in FWD, you should have no probs until you have the time/money to have it fixed...no 4WD adventures though

AWD went out in my 1998 Subaru Forester?


This recently happened to my 98 Subaru Legacy Outback.
My problem is in the rear differential. May be the same for you.
When making a turn, the car sounds like a Star Wars T.I.E. Fighter. The outside wheel is not turning fast enough to keep up with the inside wheel or vice versa. AWD is disengaged and car is currently operating on Front WD. I was told this is fine to drive this way.

I have heard you can remove a fuse to disable AWD and improve mpg when AWD is not needed. Is there any truth to this?


I have a 1997 Subaru Outback Limited wagon. I was having major issues with torque binding but didn't have $1k to fix it, so I called a couple of local Subaru dealers and asked their in-house mechanic if there was any issue with putting the fuse in to override it into FWD... both said no. They both said there was no safety issue, nor would it do any type of damage to the car. They said the only issue is that it might wear out the C-Duty Solenoid faster than usual. One of the mechanics said it might happen in 5 days... might be 5wks... might be 5mos or even 5 years... no way of knowing. It was just the luck of the draw.

I've now had it in FWD mode for almost 11mos and there hasn't been an issue one.

Limited slip axles require in many cases the additive. It is ***** whale oil that is added to the required gear oil. Ck with Subaru is best. They sell it in the parts department and if capable you can add it yourself. or, have the dealer service your differential fluids. fluids

How do you replace the fuel pump in 1992 2wd Subaru Legacy Wagon


  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the rear exhaust pipe and muffler assembly.
  4. On All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles, remove the rear differential assembly and the rear crossmember. You do not have AWD so this step is not for you
  5. Remove the fuel filler cap and drain the fuel into a suitable container.
  6. Remove the fuel filler pipe protector.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  8. Remove the fuel filler, air vent and delivery hoses.
  9. On AWD vehicles, disconnect the air breather hoses and evaporation hose from the pipes.
  10. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack or equivalent lifting device.
  11. Loosen the attaching bolts and lower the fuel tank slightly.
  12. Disconnect the fuel pump harness
