Depending on the vehicle not more than 30-40 miles because the lite is designed to let you know that the reserve portion of the fuel tank has been reached,,also be advised that running the car this low on fuel has been known to cause premature fuel pump failure due to overheating and pump cavitation..if you can keep at least a quarter tank in the car it will last much longer..(things we learn over time) this lght generally means only a couple of gallons left..but dont abuse it...

Did the garage check the gas cap during the emission test? 90% of the time an evap leak turns out to be a bad gas cap. Or if someone had gas cap off while engine was running (pumping gas). Or if gas cap was not tightened all the way while driving. If this is the case, code saying evap leak, will clear after drive cycle self tests are done. Usually after 50 miles or more.(if the leak is solved)

Car dies while driving, has full tank of gas, but all power dies in the car as well, including hazard lights

If the lights are flickering I would be checking for a loose or dirty battery connection. If the power to the cpu is intermittent ( indicated by flickering lights ) that is why the engine dies

Just wanna know how much gas i have when the light turns on

Not much-most cars can drive anywhere from 15-25 miles. "Stop and go" or "city driving" will make the gas get used faster than on the highway.... I did 22 miles on the highway in my cavalier once, better idea is just getting more gas. LOL

Gas Light comes on

Hi,

The amount of mile that you can drive after your gas light comes on differs from car to car. Most cars have around 2 gallons in the reserve tank. Generally you should be able to go 50 miles after the gas light comes on, but that's pushing it. Of course sometimes you can go much more, but that depends on the type of driving you are doing (city or highway, is it a flat road & the condition of your car).

Sediments sink to the bottom of the gas tank & I don't like the thought that these get sucked into my engine, I think you would like to avoid as much as possible replacing your cars engine.

Calculate the size of your reserve tank

1) Read the car manual.
2) The moment your light comes on, fill the tank to the very top, now subtract the number of gallons you filled from the size of your gas tank, and you have the size of your reserve tank.

If you like adventures, and you know your car mpg, the moment the light comes on, bring your trip meter to zero, & drive the car till it comes to a stop. Now you know both the estimated miles you can go on your reserve tank & you can calculate its size. Make sure you have a can of gas in your trunk, to fill up after the car stops. This is the least recommended solution.

I don't recommend pushing it beyond 50 miles after the gas light comes on.

All the best.
