Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Hello, I have a ford focus 2005, i have recently bought the car and i had wheel alignment done as the steering wheel wasn't straight and they advised that the tracking was quite far out, can't remember if they said + or - but it was 11 out. anyway it wasn't aligned with steering wheel straight again, so i took it to another branch 3 weeks later and they said it was + 11 out, why would this be, could there be an underlying issue? they did mention that the bolts they usually need to get off with a spanner, could be taken off by hand, could this have been the problem?

SOURCE: steering wheel alignment

nothing they did should have affected this. look on your tires and see if you see any rub marks might have scrubbed the lift when pulling into the shop and knocked out of alignment.

Why is the steering wheel not straight as the car goes straight?

Because the car need a front-end alignment.
Here's how that works.
The steering wheel is attached to 2 tie rods (they go by different names sometimes).
These tie rods are then attached one to each front wheel.
There are at least 2, and sometimes 4 adjustments for these under the front of the car.
When someone does a front end "alignment". they will loosen all these joints and will set the wheel straight to match the direction of the car.
Over the years, these parts wear and the wheel gets crooked.
Be blessed.

Steering wheel not centred when driving in straight ahead.

2 ways to resolve. Take steering wheel off and recenter on spline ( done by dealer or auto electrician due to air bag) , or do a wheel alignment adjusting tie rod ends same distance as each other ie move both wheels left to right or vice versa.

cupping is caused by, underinflationand/or mechanical irregularities such as out of balance of wheel or tire, and a bent or damaged wheel. have a good day !!

How do i align a steering wheel on a 2002 astro van

If the steering wheel hasn't been removed and is just off center then the front end may need alignment to correctly get the steering wheel at center.

I have a 1988 ford F150. i recently had the ball joints, tie rods, and wheel beerings replaced. I still have to manually return the wheel straight after a turn, and i have a lot of play in the steering...

With all that work done, you should also get a front end alignment as all those components combined could greatly affect the steering.Any front end suspension work as well as new tires should have an alignment done after. If you get it done and still have problems simply reply back to this post and I will get an auto link to read your comment and we can go from there.Good luck!
