You can't its computer controlled but i'll bet if you look at the part that the throttle cable goes to and where the stop is its cracked or broken off my freinds is the same way we put a tie wrap on it to get the idle up

My 97 jetta is overheating. i have replaced the temp sensor, but still nothing. even after i turn off the the car the fans do not come one...please help!

Had the same problem on my 97 Jetta. Replace the fan switch sensor on the side of the radiator. If you look at it on the drivers side about 3/4 of the way up there will be a plug. That's what tells the fans when to turn on.

it sounds like one of the sensors for your alarm is faulty. I'd recommend taking it to a reputable mechanic, or calling one to see what they say. The alarm systems on 97 Jettas are tricky business.

Surges in RPM while at idle

It may be one of two things. A intermittent problem with the idle air control sensor or the throttle position sensor. Have the cars computer scanned at a local auto parts store to see if there is a pending code that has yet to turn on the check engine light.

My 97 VW jetta won't turn over. Please help!

it could be the ground wire (black) going to the starter. try putting a jumper cable straight from the black negative side of battery to the exposed metal part on the starter while a friend turns key. if it turns over then its the ground wire. if not its probably the starter solenoid or even the starter motor. solenoid would be cheaper than motor and more likely to be problem.

I have a 97 volkswagen Jetta GLX that is idleing very low

there is no code......unless you're using a vag-com?
have you disconnected the battery recently? or anything of the sort. if so, you may need to align your throttle body. anyhow, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or more. it takes at least 10 minutes for the ecu to reset, so the longer the better. now, reconnect the battery, as quickly as possible, get in and turn the key to the battery. youll hear a buzzing of sorts from the engine bay if its working. leave the key on battery for 3 minutes. the buzzing will have stopped, before 3 minutes, but after the 3 minutes, start the car. now, let it sit at idle for 3 minutes, dont touch the gas. just let it sit. after 3 minutes at idle, go for a drive and you should be all set. hope that helps.

Engine misses at idle and after shifting (Jetta 97)

Did you by chance check the resistance of your plug wires? They have a tendency of breaking down over a period of time and need replaced. The spark plugs would have told you what was wrong with the engine many times.

IAC valve may be sticky or carboned up. Use throttle body cleaner to clean it up, and it should be good.
