Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

Engine judders at constant throttle opening at any speed & in any gear

Could be the torque converter in the transmission for an automatic transmission. Manual transmission will only do this when shifting gears, mostly the lower gears. This would be the clutch plate wearing out.

Myopelmariva has a car symbol with the spanner across and it cuts off at 3000 rpm

which engine, most cars have many engines choices.
if the ECU/PCM sets the CAM sensor (CMP) that can be 2 things
loose cam belt, or loose chain, some have belt some have chain.
if the belt is loose, the cam bounces, and the CMP sees that and gets confused, or the sensor is bad. (or just dirty clean it)
RPM limit can be stuck in limphome mode, or lean fuel
or too rich misfire, i see you mech is not so good, here state side any ASE mech would find it fast. (scan tool PIDS)

so enigne which is it. never post engine question to any one, unless you can state the engine, name and number.
let me give and example.
Petrol
  • 1.4 TWINPORT, with 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) (from 2005)
  • 1.6 (8v), with 85 PS (63 kW; 84 hp)
  • 1.6 (16v), with 100 PS (74 kW; 99 hp)
  • 1.8, with 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp)
Both 1.4 and 1.8 are available as flexfuel in Brazil.
Diesel
  • 1.7 CDTI, with 100 PS (74 kW; 99 hp)
Petrol
  • 1.4 TWINPORT, with 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp)
  • 1.6 TWINPORT 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp)
  • 1.8, with 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp)
  • 1.6 Turbo, with 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) (OPC/VXR model only)
Diesel
  • 1.3 CDTI, with 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp)
  • 1.7 CDTI, with 100 PS (74 kW; 99 hp)

it is near impossible to fix any engine not know which one it is.
and 10x on line. we are blind here, but not your mech.
i looks and goes, ahh, z16XSE or...

but your mech, fire him, find a real one and one that has a scan tool., knows how to read live data and how to check the belt for loose or slipped. or just a dirty cmp.
btw those errors mean the CMP is reading wrong. only why is in question, it is reading wrong. for sure.
the CMP can trip for 1 pulse in 10 bad. its a very sensitive test.
with VTT engines more parts to mess cam locations or jog.
variable valve timing, that.

post back your engine. on our cars the VIN tells this tale.
on non usa cars the fire wall chassis tag has engine type clearly stated. read it.

Clicking noise under hood - have repaced alternator belt and pulley

i dont want to alarm you but you really need to check into this. the only 98 explorers i have heard with clicks have led to timing chain slider failures which is not a good thing,it was cheaper to buy used motor than to repair. go have it checked out or while the motor is running put your hand on top of valve cover on the rear pass side and feel for clicks or small taps or knocks while reving motor slightly. and repeat on the driver side front of engine. and i sure hope this is not your clicking noise location.

Does timing chain need to be repaced on 4cyl at 150000 miles?

usually when the slack adjuster is at it's stop, is a pretty good sign that the chain is ready to be changed. Any reputable mechanic can check this out

Timing belt

not to worry. if timing belt broke your engine is fine. it is an overhead cam engine. although there is a good chance depending on your motor size. that one of the composite sprockets the belt runs on broke also. it is common.
