I have a 2000 nissan maxima gle 3.0 do i have to take out the engine to cjange the timong tensioner it has a rattling sound

Larry, normally engines do not have to be taken out to change timing tensioners, the bumper assy., A/C condenser, radiator, etc is removed to get access. Best if you get yourself a manual.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

When should you change timing chain?

timing chains are not serviced unless the engine is overhauled or the chain breaks, timing belts are replaced on a regular basis, this varies from 60,000-105,000 miles depending on brand and model, u have a chain.

I am replacing the water pump of my 1995 3.0 v6 infinity (same as altima) but my son removed the chain with out marking it, now I need to set the timing. How do I do this? There's marking on the valve...

This should be the same engine as the Maxima. If that is the case, there is no reason to remove timing chain or get it out of time. The pump is driven by the timing chain, but is not "in time".

The pump is under its own cover. The chain tensioner is under its own cover. The pump is removed after the tension is released on the chain, the tensioner pinned in its retracted position to take tension off chain, and the crank is rotated about 20 degrees counter clockwise to slacken the chain at the pump sprocket without coming off the cam sprockets. Then, the pump is remove by removing its mounting bolts and then screwing in three long M8 bolts as jack bolts into 3 holes (carefully and evenly) to jack out pump. The pump is sealed from the engine case by two o-rings that must be replaced. I think the pump mount bolts are sealed with silicone when replaced. I would get a Haynes or other reliable manual.

If you truly have to reset or check timing, definitely get a book.

When to change timing belt on 1996 nissan maxima

Maximas had a timig belt until 1994. Some Maximas from 1992-1994 had chains also, but only the VE30DE models. All VG30 models had timing belt. Since 1995 all maximas (A32, A33, A34 the all new A35) have timing chains and the rarely/never fail. In fact in my 12+ years with nissan, I have't seen/replaced single timing chain in a Maxima, so pretty bullet proof setup and I have had few of those cars and have one right now. Awesome cars, by the way, just keep up with the oil changes and it will run forever. One of my Maximas had 245000 miles, when I was selling it and I still see it on the road here and there. BULLET PROOF engines.
