Gas Pedal Sticks

Hi there, My friend has a 1990 5 speed Toyota Celica. The gas pedal constantly sticks. It randomly looses all acceleration and you need to stomp on it with all your force to get it to gain acceleration. We've tried adjusting the throttle adjustment screw which was suggested by toyota themselves and has not helped a bit. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When my car had this problem it was frayed cable. The frayed wires can catch on the inside of the cable jacket or at the end of the cable. That would be my suggestion.

SOURCE: toyota celica 1990 5sfe auto

The 5sfe is notorious for distributor problems. You'll get correct resistance readings on the primary and secondary coils, but your spark looks weak. Should see a bright blue spark with an audible POP when sparking. On some 5sfe engines, the coils are located in an all-in-one pacakage inside the distributor. You'll know if you have this one if the only large spark plug type wires connected to the distributor cap count 4 and go to the 4 cylinders. There will not be a center wire coming from a coil. This is the distributor that has issues. I am on my third one now. Same symptoms every time. I know exactly what to change when it happens, and it fixes it every time. Luckily, It's only about $95 if you do your searching well enough. Good luck

Cannot accelerate when pressing the pedal just iddleing

If this is a "fly-by-wire" car, gas pedal may have failed or not be in sync with throttle. This can happen when throttle gets dirty and sticks part way open. If not FBW car, insure gas pedal is operating throttle body blade.

Clean the throttle body, and each end of the accelerator (throttle cable), use carbutator cleaner and a shop rag for the throttle. And use dw40 for the accelerator cable.
