How to do cam timing on ford escort 1997 1600 16v zetec

remove the rocker cover and the timing marks are on the back of the cams ,on the end are two slots one on each cam ,use a flat piece of metal to lock into place with teh valves on NO1 cyl pointing upwards and outwards and no1 cylinder at the TDC find this by using a screwdriver down the plug hole ,right er indoors waiting to go to market if in any doubt please post a reply and i will answer it later today.best of british with it

I would wait for the milage recommendation. (Unless of course you have an oil or coolant leak that is getting on your timing belt) When you do replace it though, have the tensioner and idler pulleys replaced also. The whole deal can be had as a kit.

HI Firstly, the zetec engine IS an interference engine unfortunately.
One way to check if cambelt has gone is undo the oil filler cap and have a friend crank the enginewhile u look down the filler hole if you do not see a camshaft moving ( rotating ) the cambelt
has gone.

hi you dont say which engine you have so will asume you have the twin cam zetec engine as it is the most prolific first you need to check your cambelt is ok as cambelt failures are all too common on this engine ,as you open the bonnet the upper cam cover is on the left held by two small bolts either 10 or 8 mm cant recall which undo these and remove cover and check condition of your belt
does it look loose are there any missing teeth off the belt if everything is ok here check the plug wires for resistance with a test meter set on ohms check either end with the probes for any high resistance change them if they do good luck

valve timing marks on back of cams ,a slot on back of cam has to level with the head ,crank timing on the flywheel ,hole in bellhousing

set youre crankshaft on zero and put the belt on
