Question about 2001 Hyundai XG300

2 Answers

2001 Hyundai XG-300 witn 86,000 miles. Bought used wholesale from a Honda dealer in Knoxville, Tn. summer of 2008. Engine was running with perfect idle & excellent acceleration, until you pushed the accelerator beyond half way, then not much power.  Then a few months later, it got worse, maybe 1/3 accelerator good, then not much power, although it ran smooth.  Then a couple months later, sputtering during warm up, but then normal after warmed up, except still loss of power on heavier acceleration.  Then a few weeks later, smooth running at idle, but normal take off-engine almost dies, but it keeps running, and then it sounds like there is a knocking-(like accelerating with cheap gas-except noise happening on idle) in the engine.  Shut it off, & start it back up, & it goes away & runs normal until you take off again??  Hyundai dealer ran code check for check engine light, & found codes PO171 & PO174-lean left & right banks.  Ran test per TSB & found mass air flow reading out of range. They said it needs replaced!  I unplugged it, & the problem did not change at all?? They also suggested I replace timing belt, suggesting that is part of the problem.  I know it cannot be the timing belt, because a timing belt is not going to be perfect one minute, & then all of a sudden go bad, causing the engine to spit & sputter, & knock, then cure itself!!  I don't want ripped off.  Can you advise??  My wife is in college & needs the car daily, & I cannot afford a rental car during repairs.  Also, Hyundai ran a VIN service check to see if timing belt was replaced, but service record does not go beyond 30,000 miles.  How do I find out if it was replaced?? It runs so smooth when it does run normal, & acceleration is so strong!  Help!! Please!!  Thank You.

SOURCE: What are the descriptions for

P0171 - System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 - System too Lean (Bank 2)

They have to do with fueling the engine. Usually when a car is running a less-than-optimal fuel mixture, it's traceable to O2 sensors, mass airflow sensor, or sometimes a coolant temperature sensor. These all have a direct effect on the fuel mixture. If your O2 sensors have been in the car for more than 60k miles, I'd change them first, as they have the biggest impact on fuel mixture. I don't know what year your car is, but if it's 95 or older, there is only one sensor per bank of cylinders. If it's 96 or newer, you'll have four - two before the catalytic converters, and two after them. The ones you'd want to change are the pre-cat O2 sensors, closest to the engine. These are used for determining fuel mixture. The post-cat O2 sensors are there for monitoring the cats' efficiency.

SOURCE: check engine light with code PO171 and PO174 running lean

Just check all vacuum lnes, especially pcv hoses and if all of that is ok, it's a good chance your intake spacer is leaking. Actually the gaskets under the upper intake leak, but, it's a good idea to replace the whole spacer

Check engine light on

I hope you havn't power cleaned the engine at any stage,,,,,, Check for moisture or even water in the spark plug wells . The HT leads should be tight ,clean , dry and not overlapping ie a HT lead seperator should be able to keep leads from touching and a possible mis fire.
