SOURCE: rav4 toyota harsh shift

You have a faulty ECU which will need replacement. You may have damage to your gearbox now as a result.

What is responsible for the failure of my reverse gear in my rav4 to engage?

Check the fluid level, other than that there's not much you can do yourself not knowing how a transmission works so take it to a shop. If the fluid is old and dirty you may get lucky and a fluid change fixes it, otherwise it needs to be opened and repaired.

The reverse went out, but still drives. what do i do to fix the reverse

Loss of reverse is a classic symptom of a failed transmission in need of a rebuild. You must have it rebuilt to cure the problem.

The reverse gears are not working.if you put the reverse gears it will accelerate infront instead.what do i do?

It sounds like the reverse band broke. Typically with automatic transmission when you put the transmission in reverse a couple things happen. Usually, the forward clutch engages and the reverse band engages holding the reverse drum from turning, which causes the planetery gears to make the vehicle move backwards. If the band breaks there is nothing told hold that drum from turning and you have a forward gear. The bad news is the trany is going to have to come out to be repaired and usually the reverse drum is one of the first things to go into the trany, so it has to be completely disassembled. Take it to a transmission shop have them check it, hopefully it's something simpler.

I would like to drain and replace the transmission fluid in my 1998 Toyota RAV4. I can't find in the manual what type of transmission fluid to use.

Please go to a Toyota dealer.
Your vehicle takes Toyota '"Type T-IV ATF", nothing else.
If you use anything other that the specified Toyota ATF, you will damage the transaxle.

When driving (auto) in 2nd gear car jurks

If the transmission fluid was VERY low, the damage may already be done. I know on alot of Rav-4's, there is a computer problem, that causes transmission problems. basically, it wants to shift into 2 gears at once, and will eventually make the transmission come apart. BUT, it has to be replaced WITH the ECU because it will just break the new transmission. I would take it to your local Toyota dealer and have them check the ECM and transmission.

Vibrating Doors

You may need new motor mounts...if they are worn out this would allow additonal vibration from the engine to transfer to the vehicle body & doors . If it is 4WD then also check underneath for the center driveshaft mount. Higher mileage cars tend to have the mounts lose there ability to dampen engine movement upon engagement.

Any shop should be able to push on the brake and engage the transmission in drive or reverse and watch the whole vibration event happen.

Then it becomes a determination of which mounts to replace.
