Sub zero temperatures stop my tranny from kicking in

Ford Freestyle 2005, engine starts just fine, but it takes 45 minutes when the temp is below zero before the transmission actually can get into gear. I tried to look at the manual for where the dipstick is, since I couldn't see it when I lifted the hood, but then I read that you have to take it to a Ford Tech, and that you can only get the trans fluid at the dealer. Is this true? What can I do, just take it to the dealer?

If it says you have to go to a dealer then you will but on a side note,,,,ford is bad about their transmissions being slow in cold weather.usually with ford you have to let the vehicle warm up before it willmove into gears.i know i own one and changing the fluid or adding more isnt going to change the way the vehicle is acting. that i can tell you.

You can go to NAPA or Autozone and tell them the year make and model and they can get the right transmission fluid for your car and if you live where it is subzero tempatures then I would recommend a heated dip sticks for parking over night

This could be intermittent failure of the powertrain control module (PCM). Your vehicle should have a diagnostic check made to isolate the problem.

Hi, check your pulley bearings, but if you have had the belts checked the mechanic should have picked up on that.

Intermitant temperature

Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.

I work at a Ford dealer and we have seen very little trouble with this trans-axle. We replaced a mectronics unit in one and replaced one complete assembly, other then that we have had no trouble with them and personally would have no fear of buying one.
