The water pump is driven by a small belt at the back of the front cylinder head.  the pump needs to be removed with a special socket. From what i recall the pump has tabs on it that lock into the housing & i think its reverse thread / turn right to remove the pump instead of left

I have a 1999 oldsmobile that keeps overheating i had the radiator the thermostat the water pump and top hose replaced not used but brand new a broken head gasket has been ruled out i need help asap

Check hand brake is fully released. Why head gasket had been ruled out ? Run engine till warm, carefully open rad cap, let engine idle, look for BUBBLES IN COOLANT. IF YOU SEE ANY NO MATTER HOW SMALL, CHANGE HEAD GASKET.

Overheats with new thermostate replaced

take the thermostat out, place it in a pan of water and put on a stove, watch the thermostat as the water heats up, when it is near boiling point the thermostat should open, it is possible to buy a new defective thermostat

My mechanic told me I had a radiator leak. I replaced the radiator. The car still overheats. I have talked to my mechanic several times and now he says I need a thermostat. Whay didn't he replace the...

the cooling systems consists of a radiator, radiator cap, water pump, thermostat, hoses, heater core and sometime a heater control valve that open water lines to heater core. You may need a cooling system flush if water pump, radiator have been replaced. flush the system.change the thermostat and have the heater core checked too if you can get to it.
does the cooling fan kick on to cool the radiator..check that too.replace radiator cap and check cooling fan yourself...let me know if need anything else.
Thanks for using fixya and please vote.

Replaced thermostat, replaced 1 radiator cooling fan and bracketand the car is still over heating. now the windsheild wipers dont work could a fuse be blowed. Water pump is new what could be makeing this...

Is this the 4.0L or 3.5L engine?
On the 4.0L there is a belt that drives the water pump, make sure this is not broken and is working. Also check to see that there is enough fluid in the system.

I've changed the water pump, thermostat and radiator in my 1998 oldsmobile aurora and it still runs hot and leaks. What might be the problem?

where is it leaking from? possible air is in the system you must bleed it on some model there is a bleeder valve on the thermostat housing. possible new thermostat is bad. but not likely, i quess my best advise woould be is to fix the leak and go from there.

1999 Olds Aurora. Overheats after 10 min. Noticed oil film in the surge tank and in the over flow. Cooling system has been flushed, thermostat is new as is water pump. Belts have been replaced including...

10 minuts really isnt enough time to even get up to operating tempature much less overheat. I would suspect from what you describe you may have a head gasket problem. compression from the cylinder will leak into the cooling system and push out the coolant. The fact that you have oil residue may confirm this. Does the temp guage read high when this happens or a warning light come on?... im suspecting probably not. There also could be an outside chance of a cracked head or block. most likely not but always an outside chance. Good Luck!!

Causes for overheating in a 1997 oldsmobile aurora

Do the fan(s) come on when hot? Blow out the radiator core with compressed air (from the engine side) to clear it of bugs and other debris. Make sure the radiator is full to the top (when cold) and check the radiator cap seal rubber and the over-flow tank and tubing for leakage. It's possible that the water pump impeller is slipping on it's shaft and not pumping water properly. Remove the thermostat temporarily and remove the radiator cap. Remove some of the water so that the level is somewhat below the cap bottom, then start the engine and watch for rapidly moving water. That will show that the pump is moving water well. Allow the engine to heat up and keep track of the water movement. Shut the engine off at low end of 'normal' on the temp gauge and replace the cap so that it doesn't blow out boiling water into your face. Replace the thermostat and top up the water when cold again.
