Question about 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup

1 Answer

My 1981 VW diesel was running and parked. Then it just went off as if I turned it off. Now it seems like there is no power to ignition switch. Lights will not come on and with key off park lights don't come on. Horn don't work. Can someone help me?

Cleaning battery connection and made sure hot & gound wires are tight and checked fuses. Did not fix it, I'll going to change the ignition switch next. It seems like there is no power leaving ignnition. I'll let you all know how it turns out

Today I'll check the red wire at the ignition switch. I hope it is hot then my problem would be the ignition switch if not I'll trace the red wire back to battery to see where wire loses voltage.I down loaded the wire diagram and this seems like the best place to start. Well I'll keep you posted.

also check and see if you have an inline fuse on your power wire from battery to ignition some cars trucks have them yes use a 12 volt tester and test your ignition wires remember the switch should be in the on position.

Thanks for the advice Steve. There were no voltage at ignition switch. So I took another look at wire diagram. followed the red ignition wire back to battery and discovered the fusible links connected on the heavy wire from positive side of battery right next to battery. The fusible link wires are looped out of taped wire bundle. I unwrapped wires and the fusible wires had corroded into at connection to the battery cable. Nipped wires reconnected with barrel connector. Back on the road again. now I can park my chevy gas alcoholic. I will be placing my battery in a plastic holder to prevent this from happening again. Thanks again Steve for your help.

Ford f450 running lights and taillights out

Assuming it is gas, not diesel and not a dually. If 15A fuse 22 in the smart junction box (SJB) is OK, power is getting to the park lamp relay. Setting the main light switch to AUTO programs the microprocessor in the SJB to close the relay and turn on the marker lamps (VIO/WHT wire) as well as the five roof marker lamps if you have them. The closed relay also turns on the park filaments of the front park/turn lamps and the rear park/stop/turn lamps (VIO/WHT wire)

1998 buick regal LS 3.8 engine dies wont turn over and stuck in park.

Well , first off being stuck in gear, there probably is a problem with
The park lock solenoid prevents shifting out of the PARK position when the ignition switch is in LOCK, ACC, or OFF. The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) is designed to prevent shifting out of PARK when the ignition switch is in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position, without pressing the brake pedal. The BTSI solenoid and the park lock solenoid are energized when the ignition switch is in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position. When the park lock solenoid and the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) are energized, the mechanical lock connected to this park lock solenoid is pulled away from the shifter. The stop lamp switch receives ignition voltage in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position from the BTSI Fuse and is normally closed, providing voltage through circuit 1135 to the BTSI solenoid, energizing the solenoid and mechanically locking the transmission shift lever whenever it is in PARK. When the brake pedal is pressed, the stop lamp switch opens, removing voltage from circuit 1135 to the BTSI solenoid. The BTSI solenoid is de-energized and the mechanical lock connected to the BTSI solenoid pulls back from the shifter allowing shifting.

You would do well to buy a service repair manual subscription from ALLDATA OEM Auto Repair Information for Professionals you have no idea of the complexity of the electronics on your vehicle . You will need wiring diagrams to sort out your electrical issues , suggest you watch videos on youtube for voltage drop testing . if your dad doesn't know electrical testing .

I have a 2001 vw passat. my parking lights went out. all the fuses are ok. i installed a new light switch in the dash but the lights still dont work. the turn signals, stop lights, head lights and reverse...

disconnect the reverse gear switch located at the gearbox. It's a two pin Connector with two wires, one of them is BROWN, and th other BROWN with BLUE stripe along. Make a short connection between those two wires, easiest way is to do it by usin simple paper clip. Turn the ignition IGN to ON position. and check the reverse lights. If Lights are on, than you need to replace the switch that you just disconnected as it's faulty.

Update me about your progress and we'll solve this easily.

Good luck
