We have the same proplem and replaced the sensor didnt help. Could there be another reason the car will do this? ( this was the one on the front right side of transmission).

COULD BE LOSS OF ALL TRASMISSION FLUID, BROKEN HOSE, BLOWN PUMP,BURNT TRANSMISSION RINGS( HOW DID THE TRANNY OIL SMELL?) BURNT TRANNY FLUID OR A COMBINATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE. IF IT JUST QUIT, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL REQUIRE A REBUILD OR A SALVAGE TRANSMISSION FROM A LOCAL WRECKING YARD. THE LATTER BEING THE CHEAPEST AND AT TIMES THE BETTER DEAL ALL AROUND, TIME WISE AND MONEY. VERSUS A REBUILD THAT REQUIRES NEW PARTS, BANDS, PUMP, SEALS AND ON AND ON PLUS HOURS OF LABOR TO FIX EQUALS ONE BIG BIG BILL!BEING A 2001 A TRANNY FROM A WRECKING YARD ISN'T GOING TO HAVE THAT MANY MILES ON IT EITHER SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME PRETTY DECENT ONES. THAT'S THE ROUTE I'D GO, BUT YOU'RE FREE TO CHOOSE EITHER CHOICE. I DON'T ENDORSE OR CONDEMN EITHER ONE, JUST POINT OUT THE GOOG AND THE WEAK IN EACH FOR YOU TO DECIDE! GOOD LUCK! I was told to change my Transmission Control Module, located on the transmission . You can get it new for under $200 but, I was advised to get it from a junk yard it's alot cheaper and its easier. I hope this helps

the car has the capablilites to give data and codes. You gunna need a professional if you dont have access to a scanner and multimeter. Otherwise were just guessing.
I hate telling people that its out of their hands but sometimes its best to let the pro diag it and then you can repair it if you capable

The transmissions available in your caravan are problematic for having a bad solenoid pack. Once the transmission is set in the LIMP IN mode, then you need to take it to a dealer to get the code reset from the transmission and to get it diagnosed properly. I'm sure there will be a code such as, "trans solenoid stuck in LR" which means " low range" if the transmission went into limp in mode, then that simply means it defaulted to second gear only. Which is telling you to have it looked at asap. I'm sure if you repalce the transmission solenoid pack and gasket and perform the re-learn procedure, then your problem will go away. good luck!
