SOURCE: Rear Axle Removal

if you are talking about the axle seals, 1.REMOVE THE WHEELS.2. REMOVE THE DIFF COVER(slowly)3.REMOVE THE BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY.4.REMOVE THE 8MM PIN IN THE DIFF CARRIER. 5.TURN CARRIER AND REMOVE THE LARGE PIN.6. FIRMLY HIT IN THE AXLE, A SMALL RETAINING C CLIP WILL FALL INTO THE DIFF HOUSING. DO THE SAME WITH THE OTHER SIDE. ( be careful if you have rear speed sensors remove it when you remove the brake calipers . you will break it when you are pushing in the axles.)7.pull axles and replace seals

SOURCE: can not remove rear axle on chevy avalanche 4x4 1500.

you will need to take off the differential cover (drain and change diff oil at this time)

rotate the axle so that you can get at the cross pin and remove it by undoing a small bolt that holds it in place. it should slide out with ease, but i have had them stick, take care not to let the cross pin get lodged where it is difficult to extract

a single C-clip is holding each axle inside the differential housing

you will need to push in from the outer end of the axle, while simultaneously manipulating the C-clip off of the inner axle, repeat this same process on the other side

i will put some of pics up in a minute

Rear axle leaking at right rear wheel

DO NOT WAIT- MY DEALER SAID I HAD A SMALL LEAK IN SAME PLACE, BUT DIDN'T SAY IT WAS URGENT. SEAL BLEW OUT DRIVING ON FREEWAY, DAMAGED ONE AXLE BEFORE I COULD EXIT. $1200 REPAIR. IT WAS NOT MAKING ANY NOISE TILL IT FAILED. SOUNDED LIKE TIRE THUMPING TO ME. DEALER REPLACED BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE SEALS, RIGHT SIDE BEARING AND RIGHT SIDE AXLE.

I get a rubbing or grinding noise when in 4wd hi on my avalanche. it's fine when in 2wd and I only get the noise when I turn in 4wd hi.

check the fluid level in your front diff. you will probably find it if low. also check your front axle seals and front pinion seal on the diff you will probably find that they are leaking as this is a common issue with them

1994 buick roadmaster, oil leaking out of right rear axle, checked brake fluid is full, could it be differential oil leak @ end of axle??

If what you see leaking is very oily and does not evaporate, likely it is an axle seal. If there are no leaks in the brake system, that's the only thing back there that can leak. If the axle bearing is going away, it can damage the seal so make sure you look for small shiny metal flakes behind the seal when you replace it or you will be doing the job again very soon. Can't remember...that IS rear wheel drive right?

I have a 2003 half a ton chevy silverado that the driver side rear axle is leaking. I need to know how to adjust the shims on the ring in pinion ?

well if the axle is leaking you dont need to adjust the shims, it needs a new seal. pull the brakes off open the rear diff there will be a c lip holding the axle in, remove the c lip pull the axle repalce the seal on the end of the axle tube, put it all back together and you done

My rear axel seals are leaking and seem to be loose into the differential in our AWD town and country 2003. Will the seals be the only thing we can replace, and is it a big job? Thanks, Josh

Replacing axle seals isn't something you could do in a few hours but not impossible. The short and sweet of it is you have to get the axles out of the differential, so you can pop the old seals out and replace them, My time frame estimation would be about 5 hours for the whole job

Rear Axle Leak

if it is the seal, you will have to remove the caliper and rotor, remove the differential cover and remove the bolt and pin inside the diff carrier housing. push in the axle and remove the axle clip and pull out the axle use a seal puller or prybar to remove seal reverse the steps to assemble
