SOURCE: Starter works fine but won't crank engine. the pick up has to be given a push first before it starts

If the starter is spinning when you try to start but doesn't spin the engine over then you most likely have teeth missing off the flywheel ring gear. The facts that you say you have to push it and then it starts means the flywheel position changes and the starter has good teeth on the flywheel to engage. To confirm this next time the engine won't crank over remove the starter and look inside at the flywheel for missing flywheel teeth.

Why car won start troubleshooting tips

Why does my engine turn over but not start? If a vehicle "turns over" but won't start, there is probably NOTHING WRONG with your starter, battery, or alternator. ... Cars that won't start when the engine is turned over by the starter usually have either a fuel supply problem or a no spark problem. A broken timing belt or chain can also stop your car dead!

Why is my car cranking but not starting?A less common cause is a worn starter that draws so many amps while cranking the engine that there's not enough juice left to adequately power the ignition system and fuel injectors. Contributing factors might be a weak battery and/or loose or corroded battery cables. ... The problem is either fuel or compression.

I replaced timing belt for 2001 Kia Optima, I set timing marks correct, engine start then stopped quickly. Wierd sound. Battery ok, starter ok.

hi olga.
The starter won't crank. If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the "Start" position, it means that the starter motor doesn't turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a dead battery; here is How to check the battery. ... The starter motor itself or a starter solenoid could be bad.13 Aug 2013

Car died and wouldn't restart. Tried jumping still will crank but won;t turn over. Thinking timing belt.

could be timing belt but could also be a problem with the starter. a bad seal on the starter, loose wire on the starter solenoid. if the car is still cranking then the problem is most likely the timing. timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles

Car was running then just quit and won't start. 3/4 tank of gas. will turn over rapidly

Really sounds like a broken timing belt. Such a problem "sounds like" you hooked 2 car batteries to the starter at once and it seems to crank twice as fast as normal.
For sure, remove the cap on the valve cover where you add motor oil.
Take a good flashlight and peer intently inside. You will see the top of a valve and the valve spring just to the right of the opening. Have a helper crank the engine.
If it is a broken timing belt, the starter will turn the craknkshaft, but the valve will stay motionless.

My 2000 honda civic wont turn over and has no spark but the ignition coil and modual are both fine

Won't turn over? Do you mean the starter won't crank the engine over?

Or the engine cranks over and won't start, and you have tested for spark when cranking and have no spark? And then you have tested the coil and ignition module, and they tested out good? Am I on the right page here? If so, maybe the next thing to check would be the crank position sensor. The ecu (computer) signals the ignitor (ignition module) when to initiate spark after it digests the signals from the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor.

Engine won't crank. What could be the problem

Hi Scott, What do you mean by 'won't crank?' Is the engine turning on the starter but refusing to start or is the engine failing to crank (turn over). If its the latter, try replacing the battery. If its the first option then send more details and we'll try to help out. Regards John

It won't turn over

Try this procedure:
Check the battery like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.
If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
Check that the battery cable plus post, goes to the starter, Minus post to a good ground, like the engine.
If wiring is ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter.
Problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear or starting relay, Have someone bang on the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging the bendix gear..
Hope this helps.

2000 chevy prizm won't turn over

Is it possible the broken belt damaged the crank or cam sensor ?
I can't see a way for the serpentine belt damaging the camshaft.
Was the engine running after the belt broke ?
Have you checked the computer for trouble codes ?
