Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

I went to start my cae the other day. Wouldn't start. Have power, it's not making a clicking noise, nothing. I had the fuel pump replaced a year ago but I have a feeling I got a bad pump. Any suggestions before I spend a lot for repairs. Really like this car otherwise.

Cranking and starting are two different issues.
If the engine does not crank, you need to check the starter to see if it has power. The problem could be the starter, key switch, or neutral safety switch.
If the engine cranks but does not start, then you would check for spark and fuel pressure.

check and see if you have an emergency shut off in the trunk. it will be on either side of the finder wall. it is there in case you get in a accident. the button pops up. make sure the button is in all the way. that shut off might be your problem.

Keep 2 gallons of water with you,and top it off before each startup(wouldn't recommend this unless you are only making short trips)

Click and no crank you need to go to the battery and ensure they are connected well,If the car just click check the battery terminal and do you have a clean connection remove any grime on it,Get the car to crank and if you do get it to crank and you still dont hear the fuel pump I want you to direct the fuel pump through the OBD 1 connection.I also would like you to gather a code by counting the flashing light,Do you have this connection it on the right side front3_31_2012_6_14_26_am.jpg

There are several cases: Fuel system is dirty or your pump not working properly, Computer box connector lose, spark plug worn out, Tune up and high voltage not sufficient.

I'm thinking its the battery. Heat kills batteries. You said it wont jump start. That's a dead ringer for a bad battery. It may have enough juice to power some things, but wont run the starter, or the fuel pump, or the ignition(spark). Try a new battery and let me know!

My first thought would be: If you repaired an emissions hose, take the car back to Auto Zone (or another parts supplier) and let them tell you what code comes up now. You eliminated one problem, now you have to find another.
I wouldn't do a fuel pump without more information.

Pop into to your local garage and have a diagnostic test carried out.
Listen to the advise given. It may save you lots of money, especially if you start the "guessing" game.
It does sound like a part may be blocked or failed though, but the sytem needs to be tested thoroughly first.
Good luck
