You will probably need 5 qts because you will not get all fluids out of it the other thing that will be helpful to know is if it is front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. i am 50% sure u will need 5 qts though

My guess would be either the transmission fluid and filter needs to be srviced or the transmission is having a issue with the shift linkage.. Does it improve when the car warms up ?

e: subaru legacy transmission dipstick Transmission dip stick is behind the engine in front of driver side firewall. Move a few hoses out of the way, look down and you'll see it has a yellow top.
Other side (passenger) lower down yet, again move a few hoses aside, yellow top handle, you'll find the shorter differential dip stick.
In either case, if your gaze reaches the ground, you've gone too far.

For a 1999 Subaru Legacy does it have just the screw on transmission filter or is there also one in the pan?

I have a 99 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon also. I just changed my fluid & filters. There is a spin-on AND a bolt-in that's inside (you have to drop the pan).

Changing radiator on automatic subaru legacy twin turbo, cause it has a oil feed how to refill when ive put new radiator on

Hi:
The two lines that you are wondering about are oil cooler lines for your transmission. One is a pressure line from the transmission, the other is the return. Usually only a small amount of transmission fluid is lost during a radiator change, but all you need to do is to check for leaks on the line connections, and if they are good, then check your transmission fluid level after you are finished and top off if needed.

1995 subaru legacy with an auto transmission

First Did you take the emergency barke off? and have you checked the fluid level? even a pint of fluid can damage transmissions. look at fluid is it brown? if it is you need to change the oil and filter in the transmisson. Does it go in reverse?

1999 Subaru Legacy, Transmission light came on and car lurches,

you may have alot of debris in the radiator and cooler lines which reciprocates and introduces unwanted metal and junk in your replacement transmission.Flush or replace that radiator.
