Question about 1996 Nissan Pickup

Truck keeps dying. seems like alternator is going bad.

Truck starts losing power as i drive. first it lurches, trying to give me whiplash. then the lights start going dim. then it dies. My bro replaced the battery. I replaced the alternator. Then I replaced the battery terminals. It's still doing it. Monday I plan to take the battery and alternator to a parts store and get them tested. If they are good, then I plan to take my ohmeter and check wires. Is there anything I'm missing, that it might be?

the wire from alternator to battery was not connected properly. There were no nuts on the bolts holding alternator on. i feel like a fool. but the truck works now.

You could be looking in the wrong place. generally a weak charging system will cause the engine to just die, and if you jump it with a dead battery and bad alternator, it'll run until you take off the jumpers.

with the way the truck bucks as you describe, I'd look at the fuel pressure, fuel filter, plugs, wires, and all other related components. this sounds a lot like a fuel or ignition problem, and not a charging problem.

charge up the battery before you take it in to be tested, if the battery and alternator test good, clean and tighten the battery cables on the battery side and the starter and ground sides of the cables. if the truck keeps doing the same thing after the charging system checks out, try a tune up.

Check the Belt Tensioner. If the Belt Tensioner is not keeping the Belt Tight it will cause all of these Problems. Get the Other Stuff checked out also to be sure.

an alternator won't stall your car, the battery provides power to keep the spark going. It sounds like you could have some bad fuel, if you're able to run the throttle manually with your foot and keep it going that would indicate idle control. but if it stalls still when you are giving it gas. I would guess a fuel supply issue, either water in your gas, or fuel pump. Good Luck.

From what you describe, it sounds like your alternator died. The battery's main function is to provide power to start the vehicle. Once started, the alternator takes over and provides the main source of power to the truck, and also recharges the battery.
When the alternator stops working, the car starts to run solely off the battery. It will work for a little while, but as the battery starts to lose power, strange things will happen with the electronics. The computers and other electronics that control the vehicle are very dependent on a constant, steady flow of voltage. When that voltage dips below 11 or 10 volts, the car may start to run badly or strange things may happen with electrical system.
When there was finally not enough power to keep the car running, it shut off. Of course, once this happens, there will not be enough power left to start the truck back up.

It sounds like you may have lost your water pump or your thermostate may have gone bad too. Regardless if your going to change your water pump your going to have to change the thermosate too.
As for the transmission it could be your spider gears , there weak in the 700R4 and other you lose your reverse first with had lurchs when put in to drive. Sorry for the bad news, good luck

Hello, 9-10 volts is not enough to keep a modern vehicle running. Taking in consideration the age and model of this truck, it could easily be an alternator failure.
I hope this helps.
