Not good omen. Likely a bearing seized or broke on your crank shaft. knocking is usually an indication of crank shaft problems - it is possible that you have top end damage as well. Prognosis is poor - rebuild / replacement is likely required. Don't plan any long trips - if you drain the oil you may find metal shavings etc... Depending on how bad the damage is you may be able to keep driving it but it does sound bad if you find it hard to keep running - if you do want to limp around for a bit drain the oil and change the filter and keep the oil up to it.

SOURCE: knocking in the bottom of ford 5.4 liter engine

If you hear it knocking no bearing replacement is going to fix that long term. Its best to pull it, the crank shaft will have to be turned or polished and or replaced, weather its a rod or a maine, and posibly line boared if its a maine thats knocking. Do it right and pull it.

If you have bearing problems MAP sensor codes are the least of your worries. Check on the cost of getting a new engine. I hope this is not the problem. Good luck Moe

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu automatic when it is in first and second gear it makes a knocking sound but when it shifts to third gear it stops I don't think it's a rod knocking because it isn't consent

More information is needed to help with this.

1. Is the knocking coming from the engine, the transmission or elsewhere?

2. If you believe it is from the engine, start the motor and put the auto in neutral and gradually depress the accelerator pedal to gently increase the engine speed for 2 minutes. If you can replicate the knocking noise then obviously it is engine.

3. If the knocking is from the engine check the engine oil level which you should be doing frequently anyhow to ensure you top it up and do not run the oil level low and destroy the motor. (Failure to have the engine oil changed at the required intervals can also result in excessive wear and damage to engine components.) If you do this check and find the oil level is very low then advise here when you repost your query with more information about the source of the knocking sound.

4. Also indicate in your post what grade (octane rating) of fuel you are running the engine on.

I have since put more oil in my car but a knock in the engine developed because I drove it while low on oil

pontiac cars are mainly junk (sorry but its true) especially grand am. Sounds like you threw a rod or bearing, but don't feel bad it would've happened whether or not you ran it low on oil, you just sped up the process :)

'03 Mustang GT knocking!

The short answer is no.
Running below a 1/4 tank of gas wears out the fuel pump. Quickly.
Running low on oil in hot weather wears out internal engine parts like piston rods, bearings, and lifters.
Bottom line is you probably added 75 or 80,000 miles to the age of the fuel system and engine. Maybe more. Which can't be erased.
Keeping the oil/filter changed and keeping it full may keep it running for several more years. Or not.

Would a rod knocking cause the oil to have milky clumps inthe oil fill but not the filter or pan even though antifreeze does not leak and the 2001 2.2l chevy s-10 does not overheat? I used lucas heavy duty...

Milky oil is usually caused from condensation from some where either antifreeze getting in, or if you are doing a lot of short drives where the engine doesn't get a chance to come up to full temperature. If there is water in your oil it will cause your knocking sound. I would change the oil and put in some fresh and see what happens.

Car is knocking and was low on oil cold it be the knock sensor out no oiland water mix in the oil

did the oil light come on? it it did that means a low pressure situation which can cause con rod bearing damage. the knock sensor can cause that too.

Hello, This is the problem i am having. my 2001 chrysler sebring ran low on oil for some unknown reason and the oil light was coming on. Shortly after the engine started to have a knocking sound to it....

i think your engine may be junk now. its a good idea to check oil on any vehicle daily as suggested in any vehicle owner manual. the piston rings could be worn out causing it to use oil or a bad head gasket, or maybe u have a oil leak you dont know about. wish you luck, id probably get a new car or replace the engine since more than likely the crank shaft bearings are junk causing a rod knock

2007 dodge grandcaravan knocking noise

If your engine has a rod knock the engine has to be rebuilt or replaced rebuilt is about $2000 to $3000 dollars and a new motor even more.It is unusal for a rod to be out around 60,000 miles unless it was ran real hard or run out of oil or way low on oil.
