Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Toyota rav4/j speedometer/odometer failed to work after both c v joints were replaced with ABS rings not on the right position

The speedometer/odometer is a electronic type . I understand that ABS rings on the front wheels make it work

in addition to the above problem the brake light and engine light remains on and at times autotransmision refuses to move from 1st to 2nd gear

The engine light is the cpu's way of telling you that you have a fault /faults in the cpu management system. Ie the abs/ speedo are outside the paramenters set in the cpu. As the rings are normally segmented magnets or steel that a magnetic sensor can read that produces a millivolt /milliamp current that the cpu reads to say that the wheel is turning and the abs isn't allowed to work in the brake system. Hence when the wheel stops ( skids) a valve is opened and brake fluid returns to the mcl resevoir. To maintain brake pressure a small motor re pressurise the system. IN effect when you brake normally you will not know if the abs is working. It is when you are under heavy braking and the wheels are tending to skid that you will feel a pulsation under your foot as the pressure is release and repressurised

(Sorry about the double up)As i was saying the positioning of the rings in relation to the sender unit will be critical. I think that the gear problem is that the cpu is not getting a reading in relation to road speed (speedo ) so it can't decide when to change

Thanks for the information, fitted new abs rings on the right position and checked if it produced any voltage and yes both wheels give about 2 volts AC on rotating the wheels

check the speedo unit on the tranny (wires etc and check for a fault code in the cpu

  • Bill Boyd Jan 18, 2013

thinking more on your problem I find it highly unlikely that the abs will affect the speedo simply on the reasoning that as the wheels rotation is intermittent in severe braking the speedo would be flicking all over the place. I think I would be looking at the wires around where the cv joints are as it is possible there could be damage there from removing the axles. I suggested the speedo sender because thespeedo reads tailshaft revolutions (road speed) and therefore if the speedo isn't working that is the area I would be looking at

1995 toyota camry speedometer not working

If the odometer is incrementing mileage, the speedometer unit itself has failed. If the odometer is not incrementing, either the speedometer cable has broken or come disconnected (most likely), or the cog inside the transmission has become damaged.

The sensor is attached to the output shaft of the transmission and should not be affected by the work that you did. Are the ABS sensors ok?

It is digital, no fuse! Does the odometer work? If not a lose connection on the back then faulty resistor on the circuit board!

Transmission speed sensor

You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

Toyota rav4 j of 2003 speedometer fails to work

It could be the speed sensor in the transmission, or the speedo cluster on the dash.
If the speed sensor fails the check engine light should be on.

Vitz 2005 ABS light and Speedo

as a toyota technician, its probably the wrong fitted of the ring, once you replace the bearing they will removed the ring and in that ring there is a small hole that the sensor goes in. speedometer will not work not work if there is a malfunction in abs and it is speedometer, brake warning light are integrated with abs ecu.
