Open the hood and check for a dark staining on hood insulator. This would suggest some sort of leak from engine or steering pump. Contamination getting into the alternator will cause your symptoms. Simple to notice. Thought this would be a good place to start.

Low voltage and check gauge light

your check gauges will come on for a number of reasons in that car, the fans will not come on until the car reaches 225*.. so i wouldn't be concerned with that unless the car is getting extremely hot and the fans still are not coming on, that just means the cooling system is doing what its supposed to do.. as for the voltage falling off, I would check the connector that plugs into the back of the alternator.. Make sure there are not any broken wires or corrosion

When headlights turned on the dashboard lights dim and after 5 minutes a warning sound comes on.

Sounds like your charging system needs some attention.
1st check battery for voltage should be 12.50 or better with car off
2nd, start car check battery for voltage again should be 14.0 to 14.75 volts.
3 with running turn on headlamps and check charging voltage again if your voltage dropped to battery voltage your charging system is not working.

Senor lights are coming on

You need to have the cars charging system tested for correct voltage output, low system voltage causes these symptoms and lights. Any Autozone or other discount parts stores do this testing for free.

Just finished driving car, tried to start it back up and nothing happens. Radio works fine, lights come up but car won't start.

if starter is not engaging or clicks then have battery load tested. if battery checks good then test the voltage draw on the starter, may be dragging when it gets hot.

I was driving down the hwy & it wouldn't let me accelerate anymore so I pulled over & shut off the car. well it wont start back up. it sounds like it's trying but wont

Hi Marie,
It is really hard to say without actually checking the car, but it sounds like you may be having charging system problems. Possibly a bad alternator, loose battery cable or the like. Low voltage at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will cause the PCM to go into "reduced power mode" - also known as "limp-in mode". This will limit your accelerator and shut off some of your electrical accessories while you are driving. If the battery voltage is low, this is what is keeping your car from re-starting. Engine overheating can also cause similar symptoms.
I guess the question is - did you have any warning lamps on when this happened? Was the "Check Engine" light on? Was the "battery" light coming on?

The best advise I can give you at this point is to get the car's computer network scanned for fault codes. Any fault codes stored will help to determine what is going on. The only other instruction I can give you is don't keep trying to start it. If the battery voltage is low, continuing to try starting it can cause the battery voltage to drop low enough to clear the memory in your PCM. This would not be good when it comes to trying to figure out wnat happened.

It sounds like the alternator is going bad. I reccommend pulling the alternator and having it checked out, most auto stores do this as a free service. There could also be another problem on the rpm thing but I would start with alternator and inspect all other pulleys that the belt rides with. Good luck.

Sounds like your coil is going out. when they get hot they will go out and when they cool back down they will work normally again. If you replace the coil you will be good to go. Thanks for using FixYa and good luck!
