Open Question

My car is rocking back and forth,almost like its choking but only wen its in parked or not moving and goes away when driving. also wen i put it in drive it accelerates without me pushing on the petal. and will keep accelerating. i noticed that my muffler was trapped under my bumper and i removed the sheet of metal that was blocking the exhuast pipe and the problem is still happening. any suggestions or tips i can do to my car will help me alot since money is to tight for me to afford a mechanic or risk losing my job without transportation.

The smoke you could be seeing may be steam, your heater inside the vehicle may have a leak and causing steam to rise out of the vents, if you are smelling the steam this is what I suspect.
Engine vibration could be a number of things, check the engine mounts to start, one of them is probably broken.

SOURCE: it won't go into park or reverse

The transmission is locking into place. Rocking it will eventually only make matters worse. Transmission service is the only option. First try Wynn's Transmission additive - in a grey bottle. Works great to loosen up parts.

Um, what kind of transmission? Standard or automatic? What gear?
Generally if it's an automatic and stuck in drive or reverse it's probably a linkage issue ...something's out of adjustment and you'll need to get under the truck to sort it out. If it is stuck in Park, then try rocking it backward or forward while some tries to move it out of park ...sometimes the parking awl gets hung up when the vehicle rolls a bit after you put it in park.
If you have a standard tranny then there is something amiss internally. Modern standard floor shift trannies do not have any external linkages to go out of adjustment. You might try rocking the vehicle back and forth while someone tries to move the shifter to neutral. But if it's jammed chances are it is something internal that's failed.

rock steering wheel back and forth, while turning the key, rock vehicle back and forth to take pressure off transmission shifter. are you parked on any kind of up or down hill grade? if so, that's the problem. start using emergency brake before putting in park.

I have a 1996 pontiac grand am the trans shifts fine in all gears but wont move seems to be stuck into park i can feel it going into gear and tries to move and trans isnt slipping it is a automatic when...


Tip on end of park rod has slipped and is staying in the park position. Put car in neutral and get out and rock car back and forth by hand. Tip will slip out and car should move. This will not fix the tip problem as they are crimped on and the crimp has slipped. I installed a master electrical switch and never put the trans in park. I start and stop car in neutral and use switch to shut of electrical. Costs $ 800 to fix trans as park rod is last item out of trans. Cheap solution for me as car is a beater and am driving until it quits. Best of luck.

Hi,check your transmision fluit level.I think the level is low .start the car ( car on level surface) put it in drive,parking brake set and check your trans fluit level.

I have a 1992 Oldsmobile Delta 88, and it has the following strange problem. when it is shifted out of park, into gear it acts like it is still in park. It can be felt going into reverse,and all forward...


One of three things. Inside the trans are clutches, bands, sprags and planetaries. I believe that either a set of clutches is sticking together or the input sparg is not free wheeling when it is suppose to or the parking pawl is sticking in place until you free it.

There is not much you can do. The only possible item that can be added that might help is called Lube Gaurd In the red bottle. other than that you will have to pull the trans and repair it.

just to let you know, I worked for GM from 90-93 rebuilding those transmissions. I have rebuilt as least 500 of them. I could rebuild them blindfolded, (No kidding, blind folded)

Emergency Brake/Parking Brake is stuck. It's in a parking garage, so there's no way to really get it towed. I need to unstick the parking brake so I can drive it to a shop.


If the parking lever will move, try putting it to normal unlocked position, then kick the rears tires to see if the drums will release. If the car starts, it may help to heat things up.

You can also try manually rocking the car back and forth with the parking lever down.


If you can see under the chassis, you may find the wires have become loose or disconnected, which (if there's room) you may be able to reconnect.

If the transmission is moving back and forth when you put it in and out of gear then you have a broken transmission *****. open your hood, with the car off and in park, rock it back and forth, watching where the most movement is coming from your transmission, like front, back, or the side. 2000 subaru outback/ clunk when i put it in reverse


Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.
