2001 alllroad - Air suspension raised up to the highest setting and will not lower. If I manually try to adj, the indicator lights flash for a minute, then nothing. While driving, it will start flashing as speed increases, the the fault light will come on.
I had the same problem, I went to my mechanic and they said that the system has shut itself off due to a problem the computer has seen, in my case it was a selinoid in the pump which released air had failed and had to be replaced, unfortonatly you can not buy the selinoid seperately and would have to replace the entire pump, I was lucky though because he has a spare pump that he pulled off another car which was blown but the selinoid was still good. It took them about 4 hours to find the problem but that was my experiance. DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALER they will charge you for 4 new air bags and a new pump they quoted me almost 5000 Dollers and i got mine fixed for $500

Couple of quick things to check, when the air system is trying to raise the car you should hear the pump running in the boot of the car ( lhs rear) . The pumps are known to fail but not too regularly. The more common issue is that the rubber bladders in the air springs develop hairline cracks which leak, more prevalent on the front than rear. Get a spray of soapy water and spray all round the bladder, start the car and select a higher ride height. You should be able to see bubbles....or indeed if its as bad as you identify you will be able to hear a hiss ( assuming the pump is running of course) New air springs are available and not too difficult to fit.....dont buy the hugely expensive stuff from Audi try Arnott Industries in the US, they have an excellent remanufactured replacement which is far superior. This is a common problem.
Firstly the sinking of a side when the car is left for a while is indicative of a leak in the air bladder on the suspension, it has to be replaced as a unit, not particularly difficult but AUDI prices are high, try Arnotts industries in US, they have a remanufactured unit which is superb. Secondly the suspension system is designed to lowere the suspension from the high ( 3) setting when car is driven for anylenght of time above an average speed ( I think 50 ish MPH on lev3) when the vehicle has been driven for a period under the average to trigger the drop to lev 2 then the suspension should rise again to lev 3. hope this helps
The light can come on for a number of reasons. One of which is that the pump is getting worn out. It will run too long trying to maintain the height/pressure setting and overheat which lights up the light. I believe that the light will be lit if it is unable to raise the car to the desired manual height setting for the suspension. These all lead back to the common issues... air bags with small leaks and then a worn out suspension pump.
I have a 2001 Allroad that had the suspension pump that continued to run, become quite loud and then it failed to keep the car at level one. This all started while under warranty but it finally failed outside of warranty and we all know that Audi denied any coverage but they offered to do the work for $1500 for a new pump and installation. I am quite handy and looked into this pump and any type of replacement parts and I found a way to replace the pump for about $350 new if you have a bit of time and are a little handy. The pumps are not made by Audi, nor Continental as the label on the pump states. They are made by a company that makes the same pumps for Range Rover, BMW, Audi and Mercedes as well as others. The pumps are the same except for the exterior mounting plates and air hookups and wire plugs. These are minor. You can find the pump for a Mercedes for $300 on eBay or approx $425 in the internet. The mounting plates on either end of the pump are swapped out in about 30min (2 strange screws on one end, drilling out 4 small rivets on the other and replacing with 4 small screw/washer/nuts). The air hose inlet/overflow and output may be different depending on the model but metric nylon quick connect fittings are available at McMaster for about $3-$8 depending on how many you need. You also may need to swap out the Audi Wire plug connector, wire crimps and heat shrink tubing. I found out a good deal about these pumps and their specs. The pumps are all similar except for their brackets and connectors to your vechile. Oh, you also have to screw in your temp sensor to the new pump and plug it in. I spent a week learning about these pumps and taking it apart. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
