Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a 2005 ram 3500 5.9 Cummins diesel with a starting issue. Since it has gotten quite cold out I have plugged my truck in at night, but when I go to start it in the morning it won't even attempt to fire up. It turns over great...just no ignition. However when I leave it over night or longer without it being plugged in I can get it to start either right away, or by hooking up jumper cables and occasionally a sniff of starter fluid. I am lost on what the problem is being caused by so any help would be great.

The check valve on the fuel line at the filter housing may be leaking back not maintaining pressure when the engine is not running.

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

SOURCE: truck won't start

You should check your battery cables with an ohmmeter and see if they have any resistance, they should be at 0 ohms or just alittle over, but could possibly be the starter solenoid also.I had this same problem with my Toyota last year, hard starting sometimes needed a jump and then the alt went bad, turned out to be the solenoid was shorting intermittantly.Hope this helps.

Running fine on the highway, and loosing acceleration presure

What to you mean loosing acceleration pressure? Also what engine do you have?

3500 is often with the Cummins diesel so I'm going to assume that's what you've got. Diesels loose power like you are describing when the fuel fiter gets plugged. It's is often overlooked, and in many cases not changed frequently enough. As diesels become more and more popular, people that have never owned one before don't realize the extra maintenance they require. A good rule of thumb is to change the fuel filter every other oil change, or more frequently if you suspect dirt or water may have gotten into your tank.

2007 Dodge 3500 cummins diesel was filled with E85 ethanol

Just drain the tank and refill with diesel fuel. Hit the starter for a second and leave the key on for the fuel to prime. You may have to do this a couple times to get it to start. Run it down the highway at normal cruising speed for a while and it should be ok. I wouldn't worry about the injectors yet unless it doesn't recover on it's own.
